First large cent and button ID needed please

I found my first large cent today that read as a quarter on the ID screen.
I was quite surprised when this came out of the hole.
It was only about 2'' deep and is dated 1839.
I also found and 1943 mercury dime and some wheat pennies dating in the '40's.
The button pictured was also found at the same site and unfortunately it came apart when it was recovered.
I saved all the pieces and cleaned it up some.
I am trying to ID it and what I have found so far is that the backmark reads "Steele & Johnson".
The word " EXCELSIOR" is displayed across the lower front of the button.
I think it is a New York button, but I'm not sure.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking!!

NIce button. What you have is an New York Militia button from the Civil War period. If the bm says "Steele & Johnson Buton Co.Then ya got yourself a period button. If the backmark is different than it dates from 1875-1920.Daniel

Cool. Congratulations on the LC.

And Daniel's pegged the NY button. NY30 in Albert's. "& Steele & Johnson" is definately a period (CW) button.

Very nice
