Found this 1901 Indian 6 inches down with my 10x12 SEF coil. Set at Rx9 in my Hi pro program in stereo mode. This coin has only been washed off with water.

Howdy nalc472--

Congratulations on your FIRST INDIAN HEAD CENT!!!! I hope that you find many more. It looks like it's an 1891. Best of luck and ...

1891 for sure! :crylol:

Thanks for all the tips. I could hear the repeatable sound but it was coming in a high 91-03 range. When I rubbed off the back I knew it was not a wheat but an Indian. Is it normal to have a high vdi on a coin 6 inches down like an indian? I have my 10x12 set on 10 dd coil type. Any suggestions? The coin came out of the ground slick and smooth.

Congrats! My advice is to not clean it any more. IHs can lose lots of detail fast, and yours is nice like it is. martin

Nalc472, if it VDI'd at 91-93 there is probably other metal in the hole. There may be a deeper silver dollar still there. Indian cents that I have dug have VDI'd in the 50-56 range except the copper nickle variety which come in the 30-35 range. Best of luck and...

What's the IH test in VDI right now? Yes, I too get IHs in the fifties with my V3i. Correlate jumps it to 60, but definetely nowhere close to the 90s.

I found this one and it was on top of the ground in a funny little park that was more of a fish bowl shaped park, but old. It wasn't a fresh drop, just washed down and left on the surface, not buried. This one was even better before I cleaned it with a little hot hydrogen peroxide baths. All of the other IHs I've found went to near visability for even reading the date after mild cleaning. My last IH that I found went that way after a simple water cleaning. These things are delicate.

When I get 93 vdi, it's usually a iron square nail deep. If I get 2 different vdi numbers on one target, it can be two targets in one hole. One may be deeper so be sure to try again before you cover the hole. The v3i is great at reading two targets, so believe it when it tells you both numbers. I use polar plot to determine if it is iron.Happy hunting.
