First Impression of X70

My X70 came in yesterday. I put it together quickly(easy to assemble)and stuck in new energizer batteries. I put a bullet, coin, and button in the front yard with nails around each. At first, I was overwhelmed because it's got 10 buttons which I'm not used to so that thru me for a loop due to my simple mind. Anyway, I decided to try each one and figure out how they work best together. After 15 minutes with the handbook, I figured the machine out. Even a simple mind can learn this machine fast. Here's what I discovered. It has the option of 1-4 tones, I like the 2 or 3 tone best. Sensitivity goes up to 30 which I couldn't crank all the way up due to power of machine and power lines right above me in my yard. Volume was all the way up. Threshold on 3. Discrimination 1 or AM during test, both performed very well. I used the 7.5 khz coil for the test. The sensitivity is so good I was picking up the relics 1-2 inches off the side of the coil on all relics(button, coin, and bullet) I was pulling my elbow back as far as it would go and still picking them up with a clear signal. Then, I stood on a small block and on my tiptoes and still could hear them. The threshold wasn't even cranked up all the way, not sure how much this helps yet? It gives a hum so I probably won't turn it up much but it might give more depth. The initial yard test was very impressive. I'm taking it out for a spin this week. First site will be a CS Camp that has been pounded with a Tejon, Cibola, Vaquero, and a Silver Umax. I can't wait to see if I can pull anything out of this tiny camp.

You posted that the X-Terra 70 .. "It has the option of 1-4 tones,...".. which it does, but remember it also has the "multi-tone" option as well.

You said: "I like the 2 or 3 tone best."... For those who have used the X-Terra 30 and X-Terra 50 before, many favored the 3 tone orver the 4 tone or visa-versa. Personally, I like the 4-tone audio because it's similar to my X-Terra 50 that I still have and use.

There are times, when I am hot persuit of shallower coins in a fun race-against-time with my son or a friend, that I liked to use the Multi-tone option. I found it more than ample and pleasant.

Often, I hunted with my X-Terra 50 at first wishing there was a single-tone option, until I got more comfortable with the 4-tone audio, and now I have that. I've used the 1-tone choice on my X-T 70 and like it, too.

What I have been using most of yesterday and will later today is the 2-tone festure. I like the low-tone iron audio and the higher-pitched non-ferrous response for some of my 'bushwhacking' types of site hunting. For me, using 1, 2, 4 or Mulit-tone has got it covered. Some, like you, are going to like the 3-tone also.

Just goes to show that Minelab put some good thought into their R&D efforts to provide us with some nice options that are actually useful. :)

Enjoy your '70!'

I'll be able to notch out everything but foil and nickel, turn the multi-tone on and be able to tell low, mid, and high foil range targets apart from the nickel range. Much better tone separation than the DFX had. Plus I like the sound better. Not as fuzzy around the edges. Just need a DD coil and I'm ready for the modern trash.

that could change with more time in the field. It's still the early stages of using the machine, I might end up liking the multi tone better with more field time put in? Or I might like different tones for different types of hunting? Coin vs. Relic hunting?
Good hunting,
Dan
