First impression of the NEL Hunter coil on my Sov GT

therover

Well-known member
Just got the NEL Hunter coil (12.5x8.5) for my Sov GT from Gold Digger Metal Detectors...thank you Ron for the quick shipment/delivery. Took 2 days from payment to door ( I do live in NJ though).

Settings on the Sov GT were as follows:

Disc on, but turned all the way down to accept all targets but iron
No notch
Vol 1/2 way
Sens - variable as I progressed through the test
GB - fixed
Band 1
Threshold mode

First impressions:

The coil is well balanced on the stock shaft. Much better feel than the 10 inch Tornado coil I have.

The tornado coil lower shaft I have ( it's the one with the teardrop washer), is too big for the NEL coil. Luckily I had another newer ( I think I had it for my X-Terra) lower shaft with the round washers, that fits into the NEL coil.

In my test garden, at 1/2 sensitivity, the NEL hit on all targets ( from 8 inch merc dime, to 5 inch thin ring, to 6 inch wheatie, 9 inch silver quarter, cruddy 6 inch nickel), very well with room to spare on some targets. All target tones were indentifiable and unique in tone ( ie, silver had the highest tone, copper a bit lower, etc). At 1/2 sensitivity, it could not hit the 11 inch silver quarter. When the sensitivity was bumped up to near max, the 11 inch quarter was hit, but with a variable tone ( but not a null which is all I want anyway since I will use this in the wet sand).

On the shallower targets, the coil hit in the entire range of the strip ( ie, from toe to heel). Deeper targets, the coil could not hit at the toe or heel, but hit well within the center of the coil ( where the coil attaches to the lower rod). Loudest tone at that point on the shallower targets which makes it easier to pin point.

Will try to take it to the beach for some wet sand hunting over the weekend if time/weather permits. This NJ weather is nuts these days.

Based on this initial test, I do believe this coil will stay on the Sov GT for a long time !

Any coils for the Sovereign would be a welcome addition. But not fitting on my current shaft makes it a no sale to me. Coil manufacturers have the obligation to make sure that their product fits correctly. The benefits of the coil compared to an SEF have to be small to begin with. Not fitting on a Sovereign shaft has to take away those benefits.

Good point, the manufacturer should have the coil fit the stock Sovereign Rod asm, hopefully could be corrected.

Thats a pretty significant SNAFU if you are building a coil for a given machine.

thanks for posting this therover, I've been curious about these! how much was the NEL? are these coils waterproof?

have you been able to take the NEL on a hunt yet? let us know how it performs, I'm sure many are tuning in for the results!
