First impression of Garrett at gold

My name is Doug,I got an at gold, the first time I tried to change batteries the plastic holder broke and I had to order a new holder. Needless to say I was not impressed from the start. Then I looked comparable units only to find out in hard ground it looks like the at gold does not penetrate much more than an inch or so as compared to others. So is there a coil that can be used to increase depth of this machine.I also put a real gold nugget on top of the ground at least it picked it up,it registered a 34 on my display is that normal for gold nuggets?

AT Gold is a VLF gold metal detector, and is good for finding small nuggets at not too deep depths. Generally, when hunting areas known to produce gold, the areas in most cases are high in mineralization, which interferes with getting great depth. On the plus side, the AT Gold has a ground balance window, setting up some parameters so that you do not have to ground balance your machine often.

It registered a 34 on my display is that normal for gold nuggets? Well, yes and no. Often times gold will real all over the place, based on it's size, depth and purity. People who snipe for gold often times use a smaller coil to help locate small nuggets due to it's higher sensitivity to small targets. If you are looking for deep nuggets, there are better detectors to use, especially in high mineralized soils, where VLF machines often times struggle. The Garrett ATX https://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/hbby_atx_main_en.aspx is one such model.

Hunting for gold takes time. You really have to learn your machine. For the AT Gold, I suggest hunting in true all metal mode, ground balanced, and listening for those soft whisper. Dig them up. Also, if you turn on the iron audio, it will alert you to objects in the ferrous conductivity range.
