First I thought you Excal guys were exaggerating.....

but I've had mine for 2 weeks now and am digging small pieces of pulltabs 9 inches deep in the surf! I actually said out loud "You've got to be kidding me!" after digging one. The machine is as sensitive as folks claim it to be. I'm running discrim at 1 while I learn all the trash sounds. Reviewing earlier posts here, it sounds like I can move the discrim up the scale quite a bit from there if I want. Happy hunting. - Jim

You can move the disc WAY up the scale, actually. As high as you like. But if you don't want to lose any gold rings, leave it at "1", tear the knob off of it and throw it as far as you can.

The best ladies diamond rings are skimpy on the gold and heavy on the diamonds. The majority of these rings come in VERY low on the scale, in the range of foil. Knock THAT out and you knock THEM out. I don't know what earlier postings you are referring to but no successful beach hunters that I know use any discrimination. My discrimination is in my ears. With experience and hours on the Excal you will know what to dig and what not to dig. But you need to listen to ALL of it.

Foil isn't that pervasive on the beaches I hunt, so thanks for the advice. I'll keep the discrim at a minimum. Besides, the occasional trash sound keeps me awake.

Jim

Oh, it's not that pervasive at the beaches I hunt at either. But diamond rings ARE and I like finding them. Just tryin' to help. Running disc at the beach = lost gold.

Best of luck!

Yeah, the GT is nice. I have the Sunray S-12 on it and have had it out in the field a few times with good results. CW bullets, a little silver, Indian head, etc. I like the way it hunts...very nice threshold...smoother than the Excal. As for the beach, it's DEAD here right now...all sanded in and target-bare. But the time I had it out there I made some pretty deep recoveries of what little was there. I'll still be using my Excal there most of the time. The GT will be my main relic hunting machine for the woods, farm fields, and other somewhat non-trashy sites. I think for the old farm houses and parks and what not I will use my CZ-70 for those spots. Pretty much got it covered. :)

No run it all on 0. I'm bewildered that Minelab even put that control on there in the first place. Zero is the place you otta be!!!
