First hunt with Vaquero....

Yawn......Nothing exciting to post. Depth wasn't too impressive but maybe I just didn't go over anything deeper then a few inches.
It ground balanced easy enough once I found a area free from metal..
I need to create a test garden here at my house. Dug a plug about 6 inches deep at the park and threw a nickle in it....Passed the coil
over and got a strong beep. replaced the plug and stomped on it....passed the coil over it and nothing.........switched to
all metal and got a good strong beep.Went back to Disc, and while passing coil over planted nickle slooooowly turned down the Disc level......... all the way
to the Iron level. And still no beep! Pulled out the nickle and threw some dirt on the bottom so the nickle would be closer to the coil.
Repeated the same process and still the only way to get a beep was in All Metal. But if I skip stomping the plug down, so it's just sitting on the planted nickle it will respond .
I do this test with every new detector I get and the results are always the same. I was just hoping the Vaquero would be the exception this time.
To really get to know this detector I will have hit a few different areas........I haven't had many brand new detectors before, perhaps they have to be broken in like some
other things do.......Second Hunt to Follow....

Interesting stomp test. Is your soil redish? Or are there rocks that look rust color in your area?

Man if that darn explorer was there , could have ate that nickel...mine yells yah hoo...on those nickels...tried to make it got stuck taking girlfriends kid to party...maybe next week after tuesday ...have to work two days..ouch!!!!keep me informed about that va......I am working on getting one?....I bet your arm don't hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amounts of deep or nearby iron can really mess up discrimination mode on any detector.

No detector does as well with fresh buried as with long time buried objects.

My 1st Nautilus IIb with 10 inch coil wouldn't detect a fresh buried quarter 5 inches deep. Later I dug lots of long time buried smaller coins much deeper.

I bought my Minelab Excalibur new and when I tested in on a fresh buried quarter it was even worse than the Nautilus.

In the UK they learned years ago you can't trust fresh buried tests.

Here's what they do.

Make a hole in the ground with a piece of pipe.

Using a dowel the same diameter as the pipe, glue a coin the diameter of the dowel (or smaller) to one end of the dowel.

Place the dowel coin first down into that hole you made with the pipe.

Now check it with your machine.

Ground minerals disturbed act like iron resistance to the VLF transmitted signal.

This is the same park where I found a nice pocket spill with my Explorer.(Silver quarter, merc, a buff and two wheats) Now the last time i hunted there with my Explorer was very similar to this hunt come to think of it.
Very little action. Arm is happy I got rid of the Explorer but Neck thinks i spent too much time thumbing the knobs with each and every target.
I did find a small clad spill of a nickle, a dime and two pennies with the Vaquero very near the same area where i found the silver spill with the Explorer.....???

sounds like you have my problem i have never been able to get a coin deeper than 6" the cibola could but yes any disq seems to hurt the depth i can tell you my Golden craps out at 4" have you tried the minelab sovrighn GT yet ?

thear has to be some truth to what you just said because i know i have found things at 6" whith the compadree but when i fresh bury them i get very bad results so if you do get a good strong signal on somthing just buried your detector must be a good one

Use to have one. Made some good finds with it.........Too heavy and too awkward to get to the controls I thought. Putting the controls on the side of the box would have made more sense instead of under the elbow.

So far the Bandido 2 uMax seems to be a better detector...so far! Might be it has a better coil....Some have said the 8" brown concentric is better then the spider coil.
But as I have said, and the Badger......Most detectors don't like freshly buried targets.....And I'm sure I'll get a sweet surprise from the Vaquero very soon......I just need to
get more acquainted with her.

Hi There
Good luck with the Vaq, I'm from Australia so have never tested with a Nickel, i use the Vaq myself, and must admit i find the detector hot on very small targets. Was wondering if you Air Test the Nickle what depth do you get ???, might be worth checking your Ground Balance, for example if you are set more to Pos than Neg, not saying its not ground balanced but you may be able to go more neg with the balance and still have a good ground Balance, not much tone change, or then again your ground could be very hot.I'm not sure of all the talk i hear regards the Vaq, all i know is if you pass metal under the coil it beeps, Try another coin in the same test garden see what you get

All the Best

speaking of which, when I talked to james gifford he told me that the vaq should air test further on a nickel than a quater, I don't know maybe your kinda experiencing the same that I was, does your vaq have good audio signal air testing at 4 or 5" and then fade right after that just currious this is on disc mode well Dang don't give up hope just try what i mentioned and see what happens

I had some yard work that needed attention today ( Yes dear! ) so I couldn't try another spot with the V but did manage another bench test and everything was perfect there..... slight increase in distants then the Bandido with a little more in Super Tune. The nickle did indeed air test futher then the quarter, so we're cool there. I guess some spots can actually be hunted out...

should have had a explorer there...ehhehheheehehehehehe...just kidding...remember If you go out after tuesday let me know?
got me freaked out about getting a va...I think I want a lobo super trac...for gold what do you think?

Sweet machine. I had one. Make sure it's the ST model.

Hmmmm, I don't care how deep my Vaquero reads coins. I don't guess that I have ever dug one over 6 or 7 inches. But I will tell you what I have done. I have dug a very small gold ring at 8 inches in ground that I was having trouble reading coins at 5 inches. The sound of it just said dig and the ground was soft. That is what has always brought me back to Tesoro. They just seem to to me that they read gold and silver better than other discriminating detectors. I have 5 Tesoros (two are my wife's). I had 6, but I sold one. I payed about $635 for the 5 that I have. I have a Inca, Vaquero, Silver Sabre Umax, Silver Umax, and a Compadre (5 3/4 coil). My favorite is the Vaquero and my wife's favorite is the Compadre. I like that little rascal myself. Bill In Texas
