First hunt with the Sovereign

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I finally got out for a hunt with the Sovereign today and got together with my buddy to an old home site.
This site has been hunted a number of times and has yielded some old coins including an 1810 large cent I found a couple of years ago, so I figured it would be a good spot to play around with the Sovereign figuring if I could come up with a decent find, I would get some confidence in this detector and my ability to learn how to use it.
I didn't hunt too long before I found a 1907 indian head cent.
This is the first one that has been found at this site so far and surprisingly it was only about 2" deep.
I don't know how it was missed in previous hunts... maybe this Sovereign saw what other detectors couldn't .
I also found a 1916 wheat penny about 4" down in a nearby yard we tried later.
I think once I get comfortable with the controls, I am going to make some nice finds and the two coins found today, although they weren't deep, gave me confidence in this machine.
I sure was happy to find a 103 year old coin the first time out with this new detector!!
Thanks for looking,
Felix

Congratulations Felix, I can see you are hooked into a great hobby. The sovereign is a great detector. GH, Don

Great job. That indian looks in pretty good shape. Did you clean it and how?

I bet there was iron or other trash in the hole or at least very near that indian and the iron mask ON feature (which I think works the best on a Sovereign) unmasked that coin for you. Did you check the spot afterwards to see if anything else was there or if the threshold would null (iron)?

Man,
thanks for the comments... makes me feel welcome on this forum.
I still may have many questions on this beast of a detector
and hope to one day master it.. or at least find a nice deep keeper every now and then.
Thanks again,
Felix
