first hunt with the racer 2

Hit a few different spots with the r2 and was very impressed!!! It's got really good target separation in iron i was able to hunt right next to a foundation and pick out old coins in the iron. What i didn't like was that no matter how low i dropped the gain the r2 would overload on targets that weren't that big at shallow depths. Also having to pinpoint to get a depth reading may bother some people but not myself, with a lower gain i could easily here the difference between a shallow target and a deep target. I also liked the fact that lowering gain didn't really affect depth much. The thing i would like to see most from makro is a 5 year warranty on a good quality machine like the r2. Pic is of a few coins i found on the hunt

Yes, the Racer 2, like the original Racer, the Gold Racer, the Nokta FORS CoRe, Relic and Gold +, are all exceptional performers in an iron infested site.

The Racer series does have a more vibrant 'Overload Audio'; than the FORS series models and you can get that overload response if you are too close to a metal target. The larger the target the more likely to get an Overload Audio several inches away, but even on some coin-sized targets you can get an overload with the Racer 2 within an inch or so. One mistake many people make with most modern detectors is that they sweep the search coil too close to the ground and, often, too close to shallower targets. If too close to the ground you can experience fold-over caused by the intense mineralized soil being too close to the very tight EMF of the coil.

The User Manual, on Page 6, Number 13, alerts the user of a proper search coil height position.:

Since your device operates woth the motion principle, swing the search
coil right and left maintaining 5cm (2") distance above the ground.

I get occasional Overload Audio response with my Racer 2 on smaller-sized targets, like a US 25¢ piece, but only when the coil is too close to the target. Naturally the size of the search coil used and the Gain settings will also have an influence on the Overload Audio behavior.

Thanks for the reply Monte!! I did read that and when i raised the coil it did help some but still have to get use to it overloading all the time i also noticed that if i keep the coil a few inches off the ground I'll miss some of the deeper targets in my test garden.

Wow! Those IH cents are in great shape!

Think I've got it figured out where I can get some depth and not have an overload on shallow targets, I set the gain to 50 swept the coil 2 inches off the ground and was able to hit a dime at 8 inches in my test Garden and not overload on a bottle cap on the surface. If I drop the gain too much more I would lose vdi but still get a repeatable deep sounding signal which I like, nice to know you can still get deep targets with a low gain

I'll often hunt with low gain, sometimes as low as it will go 01 in three tone and I'll have the two tone set with the gain at 90 - 95. When I get a target without any VDI, I just toggle over to two tone and that will usually give a VDI.

Being in CT, I have never witnessed a IH cent coming out of the ground like yours. You soil is very kind to injuns. (Could be that the foundation helped protect them too) The majority of my IH cents are heavily worn and some are literally sand blasted lol. Glad the Racer provided some impressive results on your maiden voyage. Curious, have you hunted this foundation with other detectors / coil combinations? - Jim

i tried that same thing with gain at 75 in 2 tone and was able to get a vdi. thanks for the tip

i hunted the site once a few years ago with the etrac or ctx, cant remember which one and found a silver pocket watch frame away from the foundation but no coins. the most green indian in the pic came from the foundation the other 2 are from house sites, i also dug some other coins and buttons right by the foundation with the racer 2. soil is average here but indians seem to come out nice, ive dug hundreds in this condition or better over the years. ive got lots of videos on youtube showing coins and relics ive dug over the years and the video of my hunting the school with the r2 if your interested in watching, name on youtube is sscindercoop.

Ya no kidding those are in great shape

hey Monte, I've been mostly using my 5x10 coil on my R2 and haven't been bothered by an 'overload' signal at all.....
maybe there's something wrong with it, haha....seems to rarely overload and deservedly so when it does....
depth indication always seems to say 2 or 3 even though the targets are generally deeper, strange....does pinpoint ok though...
my 'dirt' is usually 3 to 4 bar and runs 82 GB so maybe that has something to do with it?

I do plan on lowering my gain to see how that plays out....may be advantageous?
