First Hunt With The Explorer

While I am not new to the forum, I am new to the Explorer. Purchased an Irish-made model from an older gentleman who took it out of the box once and put it in the closet soon after. Long story short: I have owned the E-Trac, Sovereign GT (I do miss this detector on the beach), and the Safari. Got rid of all of them last year when I decided to take a job overseas. Now that I decided to get back into the hobby, I chose to purchase the Explorer based on the positive feedback I have read and naturally the price compared to other high-end models. Anyway, here are some pics of the first hunt. My finds included an 1898 Canadian large cent, a Smoky cap pistol, and an item I am not sure about. It measures approximately six inches in length and is made of copper or brass. If you know what it is, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Jeff

Thanks. I used the stock coil for a bit and switched to the 4 x 7 Excelerator. I was in an iron pit! Trying my best to figure out the Fe Co numbers as they differ a lot from the E-Trac. Other than numbers, I really haven't seen much difference in the two.

Congrats on the maiden voyage. I really dig the Hubley cap gun. I don't think I've found a Smokey yet. Nice! JJ

Hey jeff I have something simular to the what is it. The peice I have is about that size but a dragon detail and like your's very ornate. On the one edge on mine there is a hole at the top and the bottom. I found mine by the front door yard of a very old house and I have a thery that it is a handle to a screen door. That is my take any way. Check the edge on yours and see if you have something simular. HH Metalmiester.

The large thing that you found looks like it might be a park of a natural gas lamp . They would be detailed and found at the bottom of staircase's almost built into the banester. I have been in 1800's homes that have ones kind of like that one n your picture. The style of yours though looks tobe art nuvuo. That might not be how you spell it. Artists like mucha. I don't know if i'm right about any of this. but thats my guess.

Look at Swamp Hawk's post. I believe he is on the right track. I searched for gas lamp sconces and believe I even came across some dragon sconces. I still haven't found this one but I will continue looking. Thanks for the help.

Sgoss,

I have also read some interesting feedback on that new thing. I will not delve as I have not used it but, the feedback from some is not that positive.

I have posted on the whatzit forum as well as a collectors website. I have heard several theories but I cannot find anything similar to it online. I found a couple of turn of the century coins near this item. Other than that, I have a curious piece of history!

Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback.
