First hunt with the Cortes!

got my cortes today and finally got to go for a hunt this evening in a new area i just got permission to do, the first thing i noticed was the disc works really good and was seeing iron show up on the meter and running disc level about "O" in word foil and knocked out most of the bad stuff unless i got into a big chunk of iron, the area i'm hunting is all farm field that was recently hayed and goes back 180 years and took some friends with me, but on the fist hunt the cortes got some 6" old buttons with old english lettering on it and they were no bigger than dime and a nickel, the thing i get use to on the cortes is that the signal when it hits its not as smooth as my others i've used in the past everything almost hits like sort of a iron signal which i thought was odd but finding stuff though and my meter ran pretty stable most of the time the sum mode really helps on lock on for sure and gave me the idea to dig, i think i'm going to like it, good machine!

sounds like the funs just begining :detecting:

Glad you like it. It really is a very good detector.

One thing with the signal that you mentioned, I've found in using the Cortes that if you have a coin signal, with no other interference, it rings really clear and locks on, but if there is junk around it, which is usually the case, that tends to interfere a bit, but you still get a good signal with the settings that you used (discrimination). If you air test a coin or put one on the ground in an area with no junk and check, it's very smooth, or at least mine is.

its funny that you mention that on one of my digs i did get a super smooth signal but after i dug it was a tiny piece of aluminum and even the sum mode said it was very high i figuired a silver signal

My Compadre gives a super smooth signal on those things:ranting:

Yeah it is, the sound can fool you. The thing is, it kind of gives itself away, but you pretty much have to dig for 2 reasons: 1. Just to be sure and 2. To get it out of the way so you can get to any deeper goodies it's covering.

I think worse are pulltabs. They litter like a carpet anywhere that people have gathered in the last 40 years.

Or zinc. If you want Indians you have to dig them, because you just never know. I've found Indian Heads 2 or 3 inches deep in a park that was used in the 1800s, that is still used, where there are zincs. You can't just assume if you want the goodies, that's why they were still there at 2 or 3 inches - because any NORMAL person would assume it's zinc at that depth and pass it by. I didn't and got the Indians. But I'm not normal.

Hey Guys

Small aluminum canslaw can be avoided by using coil technique. When you encounter such a signal just raise your coil a little higher while you are sweeping directly over target. small junk will drop the signal real quick while a good signal will linger a good distance over the target.

Yeah, thanks. I remember Tabdog doing that. Just a senior moment.

That's a good tip about raising your coil. Thanks:)

good luck with the new Cortes.

well out with it a couple of days ago and got a real nice big flat button find with some sort of floral design, i see everyone tells me the #'s are jumpy, well in my soil i'm finding just the opposite has been very stable so far espeacially when in the SUM mode i like that feature alot and the backlighting because i do alot of night hunting

amvjavelin, when I had my Cortes and Deleon they were both really jumpy, but I was hunting trashy sites with them with the stock coils. In one totlot under the monkeybars the Cortes did calm down because there wasn't as much trash there. I dug several newer clad coins and it hit them all with nice solid
signals that didn't bounce around. For the typical site I hunt, digital detectors just don't cut it for me. Just too much going on with the meter bouncing around to enjoy hunting or to figure out what it was trying to tell me. My only metered detector is an analog CZ5 and it is awesome in the trash. It pulls those deep silver coins out of the trash with the 5 inch coil and now with a Vaquero I feel I have the best of both worlds for me at least. The Cortes is a nice detector and I know you will make some good finds with it. HH.........

Actually had two over the years when living in the US, it more or less was on par with the White's MXT I owned for finding coins , tiny stuff and depth in disc. mode.
Have fun!

well i 'll tell you what went out for a hour and half last night but i did find a old gold bangle bracelet said made in west germany imatation, then found a old sleigh bell and a memorial penny, this was the same place where i found the barber half dollar the only thing i've been having diffaculty with is tiny small and deep square nails man those are a bit agrivating at times, luckily i don't dig alot of them
