First off...Thanks again to Tom for letting me use his CS. He didn't want a permanent trade, so he let me borrow his to try out.
Was able to get out for a couple hours today. Where to hunt? I figured I'd try one spot that I (and everyone else with a detector in the greater Huntsville, AL area) had tried before. This spot dates back to the mid 1800s as a military academeny, and is now a school.
I set up in 525, sens. 99, tracking on. First impression was that it was weird that I wasn't getting a tone for VDIs in the early 20s and below???? OHHHH..they're notched out. Ok, set it for nothing notched, discrim ON. Now we're talking. Very smooth running. Only problem, nothing to find. Did manage a button that ID'd in high 20s. No trash dug. Time to move on.
Next I decided to go to the main park in Huntsville - Big Spring Park. Active since the early 1800s (in fact, the city of Huntsville was built around it). Only problem is that it has been renovated tons of times, detected even more, and the oldies are probably 10 feet deep. Every time I've detected here I've walked out with alot of clad. Clad hunting just isn't my thing, so I haven't been there much. Good place to learn though.
Used the same settings, ground balanced, and I was off. My first signals were solid 28s and 29s. They turned out to be copper memorials and clad dimes. Dug a few 27s and under but they were all pennies, so I started ignoring them, and focused on 28s and above. Pulled quite a few dimes and quarters. Didn't get any IDs in the nickel ranges, so didn't dig any questionable nickels. Also didn't dig any tabs. Only thing that fooled me were 2 screw caps. No biggy. Pinpointing is a breeze, maybe because I've had an Excel???
All coins were shallow - less than 4''. Most were barely under the surface.
In sumary - I found the CS very easy to use. Next time I'll try pushing the Thresh and Sens a little bit to "tweak" it a little. The 525 setting seemed perfect though. Am I missing some depth potential with this setting?
Coins in my pocket, very little trash in my pocket, and all trees safe and sound!
