I just received my SE from Chuck on Monday. Other than air testing today was my first time to take it out. I just hunted one empty lot and a school with a park attached. I only had about 2 hours total to hunt and had a blast. I have owned a couple (maybe 3) Ex II's in past and really never liked them enough to keep one around. With the new SE's claimed faster speed, larger icons, improved threshold, VCO pinpoint, and new looks I thought I would give one a try. I also bought a Sunray X8 coil which I have never had before. On the EX II I mainly used a Coltek Joey DD coil.
I must say all the claimed new features are as claimed and have made the detector a winner in my mind. While I just found clad and a pair of earrings it really let me see the operation of the detector. The threshold is way better than the EX II in stability. The processor speed is very noticeable in both audio and screen response. And I just love the VCO pinpoint. The Sunray coil is worth mentioning also. If you don't have one of these you better get on the horn and order one. This coil is light, smooth, and pinpoints like nobody's business. I really only used the VCO pinpoint to "size" the target. The Sunray was just great and "X"ing the target put it right under the X-8 sticker every time.
As you can see in the pictures I dug 13 quarters, 3 nickels, 32 dimes, and 39 pennies. A clad quarter comes in at "00 29" most of the time. One time I got a "01 29" and dug up a penny and a quarter in the same hold. Another time I got and "02 29" and dug up 3 dimes and a quarter in one hole. Then I got another "01 29" and it was just a badly corroded quarter. I can't remember what the earrings read. I found them in a lot where they had just torn down and old house and was digging all repeatable signals.
My final thoughts. An SE is definitely an upgrade from the previous explorers. They who say it's not just haven't spent the time with it. Is it worth getting rid of your EX II and upgrading. I say yes. An finally I can't say enough about the Sunray X8. This coil just turns circles around the previous coils I had tried on the EX II. It's the perfect balance between size, weight, and depth...not to mention the ease of pinpointing.
Needless to say I will be spending a lot of time with my new toy. I have been kind of inactive hunting for the past 3 or 4 months and this has brought the fun of hunting back.
