First Hunt with PI pro

Sand Dollar

New member
Hi , I have been hunting the dry sand for about 2 years and decided to get Wet. Got me a Whites Pi Pro and went to try it ou Wednesday but the surf was too rough.
Went this AM, it was till a bit rough so I worked the waters edgefrom ankle deep to high tide mark.Heres my junk + 3 coins for 2 hrs of practice & getting aquainted.

You have to start somewhere :) If the water calms down head out for chest deep water and you won't find many junk targets... Nice looking zincs you got there :)

Sand Dollar, if you haven't already noticed, those pesky nails will usually give you a broken double beep in one direction as you scan the target from different approached. When I do get tired, I start skipping the double beeps. Only occasionally has a double turned out to be a toe ring or hoop ear ring rather than the usual bobby pin, nail or similar piece of metal. Less digging allows you to cover more ground, improving your odds of finding good targets.

Thanks guys. Yes Jim I noticed the double beep.I continued to dig regardless so that I become familiar with the different sounds. I remember Craig mentioning that the gold usually makes a Woow sound.
Well the sea is still kicking. I went in up to the chest this AM but had to abandon it as the swells were about 4ft and it was almost impossible to stand in the same spot.Something I noticed was - every time a swell approached the PI pro although totally submerged would give a false tone. Is this normal??
Here is what the surf was like the previous day.

Digger Gabe the coins were at about 10 inches.

Where is your gain set? I run my gain at 1 o'clock and my threshold the same and I don't hear the waves.. Only time I do is if I am raising coil out of water. Gold is a soft sound a long wow type sound is usually iron and I tend not to dig the long sound sorry if you misunderstood me.

Craig I had the gain & threshold set at factory recommended position.
As a swell (about 3ft high ) swept over my position, with the whole unit submerged I got a short low whine in the phones.... "whah" ...I checked that the cam locks were tight so that the rod was stable.
I just wondered if this was normal.
Thanks for your response.

I never run at factory settings.. I run a little higher, it seems to help me with the deep targets.. I also run the threshold a little louder its just my preference, I don't want to miss the whispers of a deep target... I think with all detectors that run with a threshold hum if you can call it that its going to be a little noisy...

I have a beach I detect that has somekind of electrical interference, I'm thinking its a underground cable it almost sounds like another PI user next to me but I know thats not the case. I probably should turn the gain down but I don't and have found a few rings thru the interference.

But I have not had the problem of hearing the waves sorry.
