First hunt with my Tejon

therover

Well-known member
Well, I got my used Tejon the other day ( it's like new...thanks Sven !) and took it out tonight for a 1/2 hour hunt. I went to a HS sports field that I have been hunting on and off for the past 3 months. It's loaded with foil, cans, can slaw, pull tabs, etc. but I wanted to take the Tejon out and start to learn it. In the past, I have used my CZ6a, DFX, X5, Compass GSP and XL-Pro in this field.

Ground balancing was a snap...very, very easy. I balanced it by pulling the trigger to put it in all metal. The threshold was very smooth. I then put it in discrim, with the primary discrim set just above iron and the secondary just above foil. Sensitivity was at 8.

Hunting was very enjoyable. I dug all targets at first, then started to coin shoot, and set the primary discrim at foil and the secondary just about nickle. I really love the dual discrim when coin hunting..it's fast and easy to determine if it's a coin.

I messed around while pin pointing with the VCO and all metal ( using the trigger). Very interesting, and I started to learn how to tell the shallow can slaw, cans and big foil.

Pin pointing in discrim mode is so easy ! I only have the stock coil but with it, it's dead on the center. I am thinking about getting the 5.3 concentric, but using the stock coil I was thinking why ? That coil is VERY GOOD !

Swinging it was a breeze....no shoulder fatigue at all...a very well balanced detector.

Final tally for 1/2 hour...2 quarters, 2 wheaties, 2 dimes, a bunch of busted up zincs, which caused broken signals, a buckle ( I think it's brass, a whats it, and several pull tabs and foil. The pull tab that is isolated was down 12 inches...I measured it with my Leche digger and the digger was all the way in the hole, and the digger is 12 inches long. Very impressive. These targets were found where I used all my other detectors, so the Tejon may have gotten some of the coins on edge, some targets may have moved due to the rain, and then again....no detector gets all the stuff.

I raised the sensitivity to 10 for the final 5 minutes....no problem. It had very little chatter, and the last 2 coins ( dime and zinc ) were very distinguishable among the light chatter and clicks. No mistaking them. I liked running it a little hot.

All in all, I am extremely happy I got the Tejon. I can't wait for a longer hunt and some other areas. I know at this place I have to use a lot of discrimination to coin hunt, and the Tejon, for the short 1/2 hour I used it, came away with flying colors as a coin shooter.

Now...on to using all metal in a few cleaner places and dig everthing. See what's in store !

Also, I am taking this baby to the beach...I know the wet sand will possibly be a bear, but in the dry, I can see the Tejon pulling some gold and lots of coins.

Congratulations, I love my Tejon too.

Glad you are enjoying that Tejon JC, wouldn't mind trying one myself sometime. I think the dual disc. would be a great feature. I believe that some folks are intimidated at first just because they have read on some of the forums that the Tejon is too much of a race horse, but I see no reason why it wouldn't make a great coin hunter. Keep us posted how the Tejon does for you. Steve.

Well I see you caught on really easy with the tejon, alot of people have a hard time ground balancing this beast but I had it down in 20 minutes.
I have been using the coin shooting settings till now but I have been missing out on some targets I think by not trying out the all metal mode because a few people have said this is where the tejon really gets depth.
I am gonna try learning this mode now and see if I can tell a pull tab/can from a coin.

Welcome to the TEJON world

As most of us know, you really have to try a detector in your own environment to make the correct call. It's good to have reports, comments, etc. and even my post has to be taken that way. Who knows, the Tejon could be too much for some. I do know that running the sensitivity lower than max makes the machine very stable, and easy to use as a coin hunter. The dual discrim feature is so easy to use and apply to coin hunting. It has a very quick response time, sharp tone when it hits a target, and the adjustable tone feature is something that although some may not think is valuable, it is. I was playing around with the tone, going lower and higher, and there is a sweet spot ( that is probably based on the individual) where you can here different sounds at the end of the beep for jagged targets. The can slaw and bits of aluminum definitely sounded with a louder, sharper beep than the mellower, quite beep on the coins. Hard to explain...you have to use it.

Now...I know this is only after 1/2 hour hunt, but this just goes to show that this machine, in my opinion, is VERY easy to use. You have to realize that where I hunted today, there are TONS of junk targets, so after 5-10 minutes of listening to possibly 20-30 targets, and hitting the dual discrim, I started to become aware of the sounds the Tejon was making and the info it was telling me. The key to the dual discrim, in my opinion, is setting the break point (on the alt discrim ) on the targets you know are junk. Setting it to where it just becomes broken, any target that hits strong will be above that level, or it will be very large can/ iron target. After a bunch of old pull tabs, I set the alt discrim to break up on those, and did not dig another one. Yup...I may have missed 10 gold rings, but I was coin hunting !

This machine may not for a total newbie, but for experienced detectorists, I can't see why you would not want to try one.

I do think I am hunting in some neutral ground, but I also know this field was a farm, and there was probably lots of fertilizer at some point....the ground does bust up the zincs pretty quickly and the clad comes up very dark.

I can't wait to try to use it in the wet sand and see if I can use it to some extent. I don't think I will have any problem in the dry, but I want to see where the break point is between wet and dry where I can run the machine. I believe that getting the ground balance right on will be hard, but I think that using less sensitivity and adjusting the primary discrim setting to make it stable, it will hunt the sand.

I won't use it much in the wet, because I have water machines, but it's so easy to swing, that I have to give it a try !

Keep you posted.

..but I am taking baby steps with this thing right now. Soon enough I am going to hunt this same field in all metal and only dig the soft, deeper targets. Anything sounding off loud, I am going to leave alone.

I did use the method of raising the coil when there was a loud target. Several shallow cans still sounded very strong with the coil 10+ inches off the ground, where I would suspect a smaller, deep target would start sounding fainter as the coil got raised a lot earlier than a can.

Lots of options with this machine.

Its a breeze to use , I didnt find it a problem to GB my Tejon at all from day 1 and mine has a very raspy wavering threshold ,I moved strait from a BHQDII to the Tejon and I dont think that the Tejon is beond the gasp of the beginner unless that beginner is learning deficient ..... I also love the daul disc as it can be used to great advantage , a three way toggle at ya finger tips allowing you to change modes in an instant , also the adjustable tone is another underated bonus I have found that some frequencies hurt my ears and its a blessing to be able to adjust the tone to your personal preference . I also purchased the 575 con and am glad I did as it performs outstandingly in "heavy" trash and is well worth the $$ if ya can afford it .

Ive used mine on the beach in the dry no probs at all getting a stable GB , no so in the wet !
good Luck :beers: although ya dont need it ya use'n a Tejon  the lucks for those that go behind ya !
:tesoro:
