I got my IDX pro back from Mr. Bill on Wed. and figured it would be a couple of months before I could give it a test run because of all the bad weather we are having in Ohio. It was 52 degrees when I woke up this morning so I grabbed the detector and headed for my favorite park. This place has real bad ground and it would be an acid test for the IDX. I have had detectors that would not get any depth in this park and most of the older coins I find with my Explorer are in the eight inch deep range. The detector ground balanced nice and easy. I set the disc at the ring preset and started the sensitivity at the preset. It was running real smooth so I bumped the sens up to the 3 oclock postition. That was the edge of where it would run without falsing. Since I was learning the detector, I was going to dig almost all the signals to get it figured out. I dug a bunch of pull tabs that all bounced around. It was a learning experience and I quickly learned that junk made the meter bounce dramatically. A good day here with my Explorer is a silver coin and a couple of wheats so I wasn't expecting too much with the Pro. The first coin I found was a 1930 wheat penny that was about 7 inches deep. I started overlapping my swings and getting serious at this point. Less than five minutes later I got a dime signal that wasn't real strong. I dig tabs in this area that are 6 to 8 inches deep, but this signal stayed pretty tight on the meter. From 8 inches comes a 1941 merc. Wow, the first two coins with this detector were a wheat and a merc and both about as deep as I get them with my Explorer. I hunted all morning and ended up with three more wheats all in the 6 to 8 inch deep range. I found that deeper coins will only bounce one segment on the meter while tabs are all over the place. I never put the 5.3 coil on and I stayed with the 9.5 inch coil. I loved being able to sweep at slow to medium speed and the detector was very responsive. This park has several areas of different ground and being able to quickly ground balance was a plus. This might just be one of the deeper medium priced detectors I have ever used. I highly recommend the Mods done by Mr. Bill. I had a great day and it was the first time with this detector and it was as easy as any detector I have ever used. There was hardly any learning curve. One last thing, I only dug one nickle and it's definitely not a CZ on nickles. I had probably a dozen tabs that the meter locked on the nickle segment and did not move when I checked from different angles. I hope I can find some clues to figure out how to get more nickles out of the ground. Now I will probably have to wait a couple of months to get that area improved on. R.L.
