First hunt with Gold Bug Pro is a hot one.

I got my new Gold Bug Pro this week, but due to summer temps in the AZ desert hitting over 110 in the afternoons, I had to wait until this morning for the first hunt. This morning at 4:30 am, it was 90 degrees and climbing, so I decided to take the GB Pro to place close, but it is a mean test for any detector. It is a place that has a lot of activity in the winter time, like craft show and concerts. There are some good finds at this place, but there also a lot of trash to mask it.

I was on site at 5:00 am and fired up the GB Pro, I was running the 5" coil, Disc at 40 and slight threshold. I ground balanced at 86 and started swinging, on the third swing I hit a hard 51 and it turned out to be a nickel, not sure on the date, it needs to be cleaned up. I spent the next two hours pulling out quarters, dimes, pennies, and a lot more nickels.

I hunted the area for three hours and had a pouch full of change, jewelry and pieces of jewelry that had been busted up by lawn mower blades. What impressed me the most was how smooth the GB Pro ran in Disc mode, and how hard it hit on good targets.

I did find a couple of gold nuggets about

Good going Colt! I'm a relatively new GB Pro owner, and its jaw-dropping performance still amazes me each time I swing. Gold nuggets with a TID of 2...is that repeatable in air tests? I never knew the noble metal would register so low. May you find much more colour, and don't forget your sunscreen!

There is no way in my mind that a 1/4" nugget would register as a "2" on the VDI readout. I am not picking a fight here, just trying to be clear, as I am going prospecting for the first time, on a friend's claim, in about a month. And, if I swing over something that registers a "2," there's no way I'd be thinking of digging it...

Please educate me if I am wrong, as I obviously have never FOUND any placer gold in the ground, with the machine. However, I do have nuggets at home, from my friend's gold claim, the largest being 1/10 gram (and maybe 1/8" wide at its largest), and it does NOT register as a 2 on my machine. It's been quite awhile since I tested it, but I'm thinking it was well above the iron range (i.e. well above 40 VDI...) I'll re-check, but in the mean time, can this "2" VDI be confirmed?

Wait -- I just re-read the post, and Colt says he had his disc set at 40, so obviously anything registering "2" would have been disc-ed out. Obviously a typo. Colt -- what DID those nuggets read -- 52? 62? I am very curious...

out of the sewer too  what sort of nuggets were they :yikes:

maybe his number "4" doesn't work? 42 would sound better?

AJ

42 sounds great! It's the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Heck I'll dig anything above 40. And yes, "2" is probably a typo.

Hi Steve,

Yes the ID of 2 was repeatable in air test, I live at the bottom of the Arizona Bradshaw Mt's and have a lot of nugget hunting time under my belt. Most of the gold here is small and hard to find, I have a GP Extreme equipped with pocket rocket and gold screamer signal enhancer, plus 7 coils and two probes. I got the Gold Bug Pro for creek beds and dry wash duty, before I took it into the field I did a lot of air test. I have some nuggets from past winter hunts and ran them and other targets under the coil. The smaller nuggets came in as 2 -4 and some bigger nuggets 3/8" ID at 6.

The problem with natural nuggets is the range of purity and if other minerals are attached to them or on top of them. The best advice I can give you on starting to hunt nuggets is to go to the local sports store and buy lead fishing weights that range in size from bird shot to 1/2" and do a lot of air and in ground test. To this day when I hunt nuggets, my lead to nugget ratio is 200 to 1, and believe me the GP Extreme can find some deep lead.

I am very happy with the Gold Bug Pro, I have not tried the 11" DD coil, I hope it has good target desperation, I will find out next weekend.

not going to argue with anyone but 2? must have some iron stone attached?

don't worry about me and hobbyist well i cant speak for hobbyist but we are just having some fun gets a bit boring around here at times :rage: so not having a go just a bit of fun.

those PI's sure love lead and gold had a GP extreme and sold it and brought a SD2100v2 strange i know but my thinking was it will led me into hot ground and gold hopefully auto tracking doesn't let the user know what the ground is doing ? more work i know with the SD.

anyway better stick to the gold bug or will be in trouble :nono:

I'll let Amberjack speak for me this once...and maybe again sometime in the future

Most of the time I hunt in all metal mode...and Colt's post is now making me try to remember the few places I used discrim and hit low numbers...I may have to go back to 2 spots and check to see if I passed up a nugget!

maybe a 2 in all metal ????
