First hunt with Explorer SE Pro

I had a free day today. I hit the empty lot beside the football field. This place has been hunted and hunted and hunted some more but there always seems to be something to dig there.I dug two wheats, $2.66 in clad and half a pouch of trash. Granted some more experienced Explorer users probably would not of dug about 80% of the trash targets I dug today but I was out to learn and to be honest, some of it was just me trying to force a good target that just wasn't there. I started off by clearing the screen, I like hunting with little to no discrimination, semi auto 26 and left everything factory settings. It didn't take too long to figure out I'm just not a fan of Conductive Sounds.I switched to Ferrous and found I verry much preffered it. For the most part I stayed in the Smart screen, I only switched to Digital trying to figure out the nickel area. If the cursor was near the upper right corner and gave a solid high tone it was a coin everytime. Hit couple targets that rang up 12 - 12 , 11 - 12 was getting tired so passed those up, figured if it was a good target I could get them another day. Anybody hit something good with those numbers? It was a good day, weather was good with temps in mid 50's and I had fun!

I like to hunt with a wide open screen too (no discrimination). Unfortunately to do that on the Explorers you almost have to use ferrous mode. In conductive mode iron will sound like a coin. Now, if you add just a little iron mask in conductive you have what I like to use. You can hear the difference in conductive targets and iron rarely pokes through. You can also dig good stuff next to iron this way. Try conductive with just about an eighth inch of iron mask discriminating out the iron side. If I want to dig it all, I will use ferrous. If I am hunting say a yard, where I need to be more choosy, I will run conductive with a tiny bit of iron mask. Try it you will like it.

Thanks . Looking forward to the links.

I think I got the set up the way I like it. I'm gunna stick with that until I have a good grasp of the machine. I do like the idea of being able to switch over and cherry picking a lawn.

I need to reread the section on Iron Mask as I'm still a bit confused on it. I know you can turn it on and off but is it totally seperate or does it have an effect on the over all disc ?

Iron Mask is Discrimination but, think of it as straight lined disc. Meaning lets say you set it at 16 you will notice you have much more Disc (black area) then say setting it to 24. Just hit the IM button twice to adjust then detect to hunt.

I sent the links via PM.

So, Iron Mask settings will have no effect to the machine when "off" ? Coming from a Garrett I think I'm trying to confuse it with their Iron Disc function.

I didn't get a PM, sorry.

Not exactly sure what you mean about when the machine is off. Iron mask is just discrimination in a straight line starting at the left (where iron is) like MikeO said. If you set it, turn off the machine, then turn the machine back on, everything should be as it was when last set, including iron mask. It is really simple once you mess around with it.

By off you obviously you mean Iron Mask. No you are either in Iron Mask or you are not.
You could be in a Custom Program you made or a Preset Program or Iron Mask (which both Robin and I have explained).

Do you see a Red "Someone has sent you a Private Message" two spaces to the right of your log on name like this> Welcome, MikeO (log out) _____ Control Center_____Message Center
Maybe you have to reach a number of posts prior to be allowing to PM??? Cannot remember though. If so get your post count up.

In the meantime here is one link that is great for reference. The post was done by Mike Moutray and the link is from an long time user here that I have not seen around in a long time.

Thanks MikeO, I have a better understanding now. With some time time in I'll probably learn when to use it.

BF... I had to chuckle at your coment. I could only imagine you muttering " What is this guy thinking." lol
