First hunt with 900

jayhop

Well-known member
Not many good targets, plenty of trash.
I've hunted this site heavily over the last month.
But I've attached a picture of a really nice fatty I found today so you can understand why I keep going back.
I did dig approximately twice as many square nails as i have been digging at this site with Deus II. I cut the sensitivity down to 22 a it got a little better.
I had iron bias at 5, sensitivity 22, recovery at 7, Park 1.
Like I said, still dug nails but with the sensitivity cut down it was better.
I've been running the Deus II at 99 sensitivity on this site and been only digging 7 or 8 square nails each hunt.

I really like that Indian jayhop----but----do you think the D2 is still going to be the top detector (of those two)?

That's a tough question and it's really too early to say.
I'm having a hard time deciding what machine I'm going to use tomorrow. I'm probably going to use the 900 but the Deus II will definitely be in the truck in case I change my mind.
I really hope that Minelab does something about these new machines sounding so good on a square nail.

Thanks.

My D2 does a little falsing on square nails/iron to but nothing really excessive.------The E800 is the one that drove me nuts in that regard (when I had it).------From what you are saying--it sounds like the new 900 isn't much different (in the iron).

I went back to the same site today and used the 900 again. I still dug some nails that sounded really sweet, even at F5.
Again, very few desirable targets but I did find a large cent. But not in the best shape. Pretty sure it was in a fire, but it's the only sign of a fire I've seen at this site.

Beautiful IH! When it comes to sensitivity, I believe the 900 is a bit more “amped up” than the 800. I also believe this is why hunters are digging more iron with it… Just my opinion.

Nice finds I tried park 1 seems to me I'm digging too much deep iron it's very noisy I switched to field 2 much better hit a silver dime right after.

Yep especially in Park 1 I switched back to field 2 much better the amout of deep iron im digging is less hit a silver dime right after my testing at a school.

Thank you for your findings.

Thanks, I'll give it a try next time I'm in heavy iron. I generally use Park 1 since it gives me a more accurate ID on the deeper targets.

Was the 900 just a rebranded 800 with a folding shaft and reworked pod, curious as i'm in the market for something.
What would make me get the 900 over the 800 in terms of depth or accuracy of deep target's.

I would definitely get the 900 over the 800 if I didn't already have an 800.
To me the 900 feels and swings better.
Definitely appears to be built better.
Comes with 6 inch coil.
In one test I did it separated better than the 800.
In one test there was no depth advantage but on another target there was a depth advantage.
Plus I'm sure they will come out with some kind of update for the 900, but I doubt that will happen with the 800.

What I don't like is the backlight. Something may be wrong with mine. I can only see it in the dark.
I don't like that the shaft doesn't have holes and the spring button. You have to really tighten the cams to keep it from twisting. And it's had to get back straight and to the right length each time because there is nothing to go by.
And the coil is really tight, but it still moves when putting the detector on the ground while retrieving the target. So when you get back up it's hard to get it back level.

I'd still get the 900. You can get it for $1000. That's all I will say about that.
But you can get an almost like new 800 for just over $500 if you look hard. I sold one for 500 and have a second one for sale that has 1 year warranty left for under 600. But I'm only selling to anyone that will make the drive to get it. Not shipping or doing PayPal.

I'm really liking that new pod design with the better grip. Guess it's time to get the 900.
If i could afford it i'd buy the manticore.

I may get one later. I had one on order an cancel it and got the 900. It may be slightly better but don't think it's 500 dollars better from what I've seen.
