First Hunt With 705

Went out with the 705 with stock 9 in. and also tried the 6 in. Found one ring about 3 in. deep that come in at 8. Also just clad around $1.45. The soil balanced around 16-18 and was very dry. Was running sensitivity around 24-26 and run smooth. Used four tones. I did not dig any targets over 4 in. deep. The depth icons seemed to read deeper than the targets were with both coils. Being very dry is this common? Found I have to slow down I think as I'm use to hunting alittle faster with other units. In checking targets I switched to all metal and if I heard any iron I moved on is this the normal thing to do? Thanks for any help. Joe

Sounds right Joe.
Ground moisture level is a factor, and going slow is key to success especially places that have been hunted before.
Follow Randy's "three rules of consistency" and you won't go wrong.

BTW, was that ring you found gold? Coming in with a TID of 8 it could well be.

Yeah you have to swing them a little slower. But I think that is why they will find things left by others.

Same here Joe with the depth icons. But the depth scale is very helpful to me. When I get 3 of them, 4 to 6 inch range, and my id is 38, I can usually bank on some kind of silver dime! The scale is usually off an inch or two, but a very helpful tool! I truly love using my X705. I cant ever see myself purchasing another machine. I find my share! Good luck Joe! HH ALL

Good to see you back in the "swing of things" with the X-TERRA, Joe. Sweep speed is relative to the other detectors you might be use to swinging. I find the X-TERRA to be "mid-range", as far as sweep speed in that I need to swing it slower than my 6.59kHz White's units...but faster than my FBS or BBS units. As to the depth indicator...I will honestly tell you that I don't remember the last time I even looked at mine. I figure, if I am proficient in pinpointing and with target analysis, I simply dig a hole surrounding the target. If it isn't in the plug, I dig a little deeper. Sooner or later, I'll find the target. I know that sounds simplistic. But that is how I do it. HH Randy

Hi Joe. You found a ring your first time out! Wow!
Congratulations!
Regarding depth, everyone has thier own ways of hunting.
But I'm going to pay a lot of attention to depth from now on!
At my age, I'm done digging foot and a half deep holes for nothing!!
This is one reason why I am going to switch to six inch coils.
I dont think they go down much farther than 9 or 10 inches.
Happy hunting. Kev

Hi Andy. I was using a DD 14" coil on the beach.
That coil could go down two feet or more on big iron!!
I dont know how many super deep holes I have dug and never did
get down to the target.
I think that metal detecting on beaches is a little different than
most sites. With all the big iron anchors and whatnot buried so deep,
You could dig all the way to china if you had a real big coil.
The funny thing is, once you get focused on digging up a target,
you sort of lose track of how deep you are digging.
So I try and stay focused on how deep I'm digging now.
If its more than a foot down, I have to learn to just fill in and walk away.
Happy hunting, Kev
