Had to go cross town to pickup a paddle boat from my brother for the pond.The City of Pontiac is in the path from Oxford to Keego Harbor.This old Pontiac park has been worked many times but still yields good finds.I used the Sovereign XS with a 800 Slimline coil and the Sunray S-1 probe.Nice sunny day low 50s not a lot of people in the park.Just started working retail sales and its nice to just relax metal detecting.The standard Jolly Roger Headphones work great just enough volume with out overkill.The ground was moist underneath the sod.Lots of trash I always run the discriminate to the lowest setting and pick through the targets lot of 162s here and 178s.My third target was a very strong 180 signal about six inches down a 1936 Mercury Head dime.Of the 7 pennies 5 were wheat pennies two very deep about nine inches requiring a wiggle.The two hour first hunt was a good start.The old Sovereign with a straight shaft and S-1 probe and the small coil worked very well.HH Ron

Not a Bad start for this time of year, I'm going to OC Md, first time out this year , this weekend. don't expect to find much other then a few coins there also. Just nice to get out. You got silver and some wheats...a great starter if I would say........miine will be clad........joe

Nice hunt Ron. That XS model is my favorite, so simple and effective.

those are great finds...congrats....:clapping::detecting:

Printing this out to read over a smoke....Thanks for the field report and can't wait to read it. Just wish it was longer! :biggrin:

Joe,its like fishing you might snare some gold and nice silver.I sold a Sovereign last year to my brother in Virginia and he is hooked.I'll get a call ever day or so telling me about his finds.Goog Luck Thanks Ron

Felix,I still like finding silver and the wheats are an indicator the search is going well.HH Thanks Ron

Neil,the XS works great.Though I had another Sovereign at the time I bought this unit and it was tuned way to low on the tone pot so I matched it with my other unit.LOL it was like tuning a guitar string to get the right tone to match the other.Simple is good. HH Thanks Ron

Critterhunter those cigarettes are bad for your health and wallet LOL.The Sovereign is one of the most pleasant detectors to park hunt with.I would like to have consistent silver and gold finds.Like everyone else I'm always looking for that magic bullet with coils,and at this point in my parks the 800 works the best for me with depth and target separation.Thanks and Good Luck.Ron

That's starting the year off right Ron. Nice finds! The Sovereigns sure are addictive and they love those old Wheat's and Indians at depth.

Crazyman,I agree the Sovereign's are great for old pennies.My hunt today yielded another 8 wheat's a 1945P War nickle and a 1944 Mercury Head Dime.I had one deep clad dime at a depth of about 8 inches,after checking the date 1968.The War Nickle was a strong signal but a 147-149 bounce. To days silver dime very deep about nine inches and require a wiggle but locked on at 180.The oldest wheat 1939,found at least three of the wheat's with another blended target,which ran from 177 and centered over the 180 lock on to dig target.Slow sweep search with the 800 Tornado coil.Sunny day 55 degrees.Thanks HH Ron

Good finds and nice way to start off the year hitting some silver. Yea, I've heard smoking is bad for you I think. :biggrin: I'm going to try quiting soon again I think. This is how dumb I am, I didn't start until I was 30. Used to smoke a cigar here and there in the bar and ended up borrowing a smoke once in a while because I was out of cigars. Next thing you know I'm buying packs. Not very smart on my part.

Thanks for the field reports.

Critterhunter,the weather is taking a dive here and a lot of work coming this weekend.I 'm going for a couple of searches next week.LOL my sister in law wants me to find a decent detector for around 200.00 dollars.I'm giving her a choice of two units I have a Compadre or a Fisher 1260X.Thanks HH Ron

Ron, we had been getting better weather the last few weeks but today I woke up to find about 1" of snow on the ground and it's windy out. Was planning on going out later today. Might still do that if the snow melts and the wind dies. If not then tomorrow is looking good. If she's not experienced at detecting I'd for sure get her something with a VDI screen and perhaps multitones. A QXT (Pro is same unit) would be a nice simple/easy machine to use. An M6 with it's VDI #s and more tones would be even easier for her, but I think used they are still going in the $400 range or so. QXTs are done to like $200 to $300 used since they haven't made them for a while. Don't even look at the Prizms. Total junk and I think harder for a newbie to use.

Critterhunter,I went with the Compadre(one knob wonder) that gives them a life time warranty.The sensitivity isn't bad for the 5.75 coil and could probably increase the sensitivity with an adjustment on the internal trimmer.Thanks HH Ron

That should work. Good machine regardless. I just think it's easier for a newbie to use a VDI and multi tones to help walk them through what is worth digging or not as they learn. But then again, you can never go wrong with using just about any basic detector to get your feet wet. Anything that gets a person into this wonderful hobby is a good thing. I think we all started with some pretty basic and junky machines, but that one you got for her is heads and shoulders above what I started out with (An 80's Bounty Hunter and a Garrett, both wouldn't even be good enough to sell at a Dollar General store these days).

I remember my first time out with the Bounty Hunter as my first machine. Hit a grass area where a gambling tent was just taken down from the Home Coming Days Fair. I'd say I found about 20 quarters and 4 or 5 Susan B Dollars that were just laying in the thick grass without even needing to dig. Once the machine pinpointed them I just brushed the grass to the side to find them. I was hooked from that day on. Just wish every hunt was that easy.

My first great TR detector was a IB 100.The old IB series were good back then.If I see an old IB 100, 200 or 300 around I'lll buy i one but very hard detector to find.Even the little Compadre is light years ahead of these. Thanks HH Ron
