First hunt of 2016

Like everyone in the east, we've had a mild winter until recently. Just had our first hard freeze two nights ago. My last hunt was in early December. I went out for a couple hours this morning, found a nice flat button (16 mm) with backmark, an 1884 Indian, and three wheats 1917, 1942, and 19?. The button was a very faint signal, depth was about 8 inches. The ground is nice and moist, the top inch is frozen in a few spots. I also saw a worker clearing brush from an area with a backhoe in this park. Looks like a good area to go back to. I happen to know that the area he was clearing had a lot of foot traffic in the old days. Also found the usual screw caps and scraps of copper wire.

Love the IH. That's a nice Scovill "treble gilt" button. Wonder what the age is on that?

I'm not a button expert, but from some online research it looks like it's pre-Civil War.
