First Hunt in a Month

Best $.39 I've ever found ! It actually didn't start out as a hunt but rather a little feelout of my new 10"DD and pro pointer. Ended up hunting about 2 hrs. in my backyard and everything I dug up is in the photo, including trash. Along with the little bit of clad I found two old toy metal plane parts and a strange "nugget" of some type that rang up a solid 80 VDI. (I'm going to post it with details on the "whatzit" forum). The one plane wing has old alligatored green lead-type paint still on it. I was stoked to find the plane parts. Strange thing was the smaller wing repeated an 18-22 VDI and the larger wing repeated a 14 VDI. I'm really impressed, so far, with the 10"DD. I haven't hunted my yard super thoroughly but I'm pretty certain it was separating targets ( on 2 of the 3 dimes ) that I missed before. Definitely not scientific. The signals were clean and clear and the pinpoint appears to be just forward of dead center maybe an inch. The ground was reading 26-30. I was running C/J and the gain at just above 10 and the noise was not bad IMO. I could have easily turned it up to between +1 and +2 and still hunted but I was only hunting shallow and chose to quiet it down a little. Disc just above 2. Slight hum. I was going very slow and taking it easy so I didn't dig any deep targets and only 2 @ 4". ( 1963 penny and the "nugget" ). I'm tellin you right now the Garrett pro pointer is worth it's weight in gold ! If you use a pinpointer, or even if you don't, I highly recommend getting one. You'll see. Going as slow as I was it was the only reason I was able to retrieve as many targets, good and bad, as I did. Well hopefully I'll heal up soon so I can get all my new toys out to a good site.

Air test4- 5", in-ground 3" confirmed. The depth is great but it has other features that are just as useful. I'm not a Garrett rep ( I've never even used a Garrett machine before ) but these things are engineered right. Check one out Curt and see for yourself. I just picked mine up from Larry.

Glad you like the Pro Pointer Scott, it's a dandy.

That's putting it lightly Larry, at least as far as the comparisons I've personally made. I don't mean to sound like a testimonial but Curt, if you pick one of these up ( did I mention Larry has them at as good a price as anyone, I did my homework ) you'll definitely be tossing your old pin pointer in with the next detector you sell. On targets 3" deep and under literally once I picked up the signal with my MXT, I could set the machine down and quickly & exactly pinpoint, locate and retrieve the target with the pro pointer and not have to pick up the MXT again until I was ready to move on. Impossible with the Bullseye I used. Barring having a DX1 probe on here, I can't see it getting any better than this, The only test left is to see how well it holds up under a lot of use. When I can hunt regularly again I can already see that I will be using it a lot, and I'm not overly easy on my equipment. ( The MXT gets a little extra care I admit ). It looks and feels solid and well-built, like a good tool should so I'm pretty sure it will hold up fine. I checked out the Garrett forum reading up on these and some guys swear to long, trouble-free use. I'll believe it. Just tryin to help. Good luck.

Not to derail this thread, but I have a Pro Pointer, and just picked up a Pistol Probe. The Pistol Probe goes about twice as deep as the Pro Pointer. But just like my detectors, I'm keeping them both. :)

Great outing Scott. Happy to hear that you were able to get out and detect. Do you think the piece of "nugget" is a piece of lead? We come across quite a few of those darn things in private yards. Too bad it isn't a gold nugget. Thanks for the input on the pinpointer. HH, Nancy

Hi Nancy. Lead was my first thought on the nugget but after closer inspection and informal tests ( polishing ) I'm certain it isn't lead. I haven't sanded or filed it yet. It's approx coin-sized and I estimate weighs roughly around an ounce. I'll weigh it today. With the VDI showing a solid 80 out-of-ground my best guess is copper. Would lead read that high ? I wish I could show a detailed close-up of the surface "grain". In my uneducated opinion, it looks to have probably formed through natural processes. Total speculation on my part. Just havin fun. I'm gonna check out the "whatzit" forum to see if anyone else has some good ideas. If not i'll have to figure out someone to take it to for ID. Any suggestions ? Thanks.

Hi Scott, Yes, lead will read high. My old lead battleship read as a silver dime, but I was glad to see the ship instead of the dime. Now when we've dug lead fishing sinkers of hopes of a silver coin, that's another story. :rage: LOL. I wouldn't know where you could take your nugget to see what it is. Maybe someone on here will know where. Keep us posted and HH, Nancy

Thanks Nancy. I think you're right and my "certainty" that it's not lead is wrong. After filing the surface and bringing out a fresh bright silver/grey color I'm pretty certain it's just that....lead that is. Guess I'll be melting it down into a fishing weight. Still a cool find for me...have you seen the price of lead sinkers lately ?

Thanks Pat. Never heard of that. I'll have to googl it and find out what it is.

If you are around cw sites, it's where they melted lead for bullets or used the powder to stsrt a fire and tossed the lead in the fire
