First hunt at old mill site/farm site

Across the street from me is a small stream during the 1800's there were probably 4+mill sites up and down the 3/10's of a mile road I live on. I got permission to hunt a large section of property a long time ago. I last visited this site early spring, I got a huge case of poison ivy, and I never went back. I finally mustered up the courage to go at it again last Saturday, and I'm glad I did. The property I was on, last had a mill structure on it in the 1960's, when it was burned down by the town. I do not believe the mill had been in use since the 1940's. I know the mill had been built in the 1840's. It started off making covered wagons, and then was converted into making Trolley cars. There's still a huge section of track in the woods. The owner told me the location of an old storage "shed" which they used to trade out of, and pointed to a location where there was a huge barn up on a hill. This is all on the other side of the stream. On the near side, there still stands a barn and some apple trees. This I considered the more "modern" side and I hadn't detected it yet. I did a little bit of both this day, I'll narrate the rest via the pictures.

[attachment 104169 090608Huntpics1a.jpg]The fork, glass salt shaker, buckle, clay pipe bowl fragment, glob O' metal, and big a$$ copper thing came from the far "older" side. Very trashy, lots of nails. The remainder came from the near side by the stream and under the apple trees.

[attachment 104174 090608Huntpics8a.jpg]Here's a close up of the big copper thing, it's about the size of my hand. The odd part is, the top of it, which I think would be round/domed is filled with holes, almost like a strainer. Does anyone know what his is? I'll post a few more picks.

[attachment 104177 090608Huntpics6a.jpg]Here's my best find here so far, my first half dollar. Unfortunately, as you can see I scraped it a bit. Stupid canslaw. I had uncovered 3-4 pieces right on top of this. I honestly thought I was digging the remainder of it up and wasn't being careful. I should have listened to my SE more carefully, with 20/20 hindsite I know that the last signal was too sweet to be canslaw.

[attachment 104178 090608Huntpics7a.jpg]Here's the back side of it, still a lot of detail. That divit on the wing wasn't my doing. I'm so upset about the front, I know you're not supposed to clean them, but perhaps some cleaning will tone down the appearance of the scratches.

I have some close up shots of the buckle I want people to take a look at, I'm going to have to respond to this post to "get around" the 6 pic limit.

Thanks for looking, and please chime in if you have any ideas on some of the finds.

Jai

Here are the close ups of the buckle. If anyone has an idea of what type of buckle it was, such as belt buckle or what have you, I'd appreciate the feedback.

[attachment 104183 090608Huntpics2a.jpg]Here's a close up of the front. You can see the interlocked circles going all the way around it. This copper has rough junk all over it, I've soaked it in peroxide with no luck. The stuff seems to be glued over the surface. i'm wondering if it was some type of enamel.

[attachment 104185 090608Huntpics3a.jpg]Here's a shot of the back, the iron thing in the center detached after the peroxide bath. I can see in the rust nugget that there was a small pin there at one point.

[attachment 104186 090608Huntpics4a.jpg]Here's a side view of it, you can see the arc on it is pretty profound.

[attachment 104187 090608Huntpics5a.jpg]Here is a close up of the back side where there are some letters. In the center to the slight right you can see the letter "H" I think there may be an S and an O there as well, however the thing is so cruddy and so clean resistant I can't make it out. By the slight rust spot on it, I believe this may be where the pin rested. (not sure of the official term for the thing that goes into the hole in the belt strap. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to clean this better? Aluminum jelly?

Thanks for looking and providing feedback.

hrmm, coffee filter, I can believe that, good to the last drop I suppose. It's pretty thick copper, I could not even flex it to open it up some more. Thanks Vern!

Do you really think it dates back to colonial times? Wow... Any sites out there that may help in tighten up the time frame?

oops, now i seen Vern's post. Yep, part of a percolater.

Looks like a perculator coffee filter to me too...Very nice SL half...I still need to find one of them....

Grrrr, one small spot of poison ivy on my right wrist from this hunt. A fair trade off I suppose!
