First Half

Back-tracked to one of my earlier sites with my new and improved ACE 250 (it keeps gettin smarter). Came up with 33 pennies, 2 quarters, 2 dimes (clad), a 50-cent token good towards the purchase of food&beverage at "Twin Creeks", wherever that is and a Franklin half 1954--not in the best of shape but hey I'll take it. Do any of you coin experts out there know what that little squiggly thing is on the half just to the right of the date? Is that normal?

I have 4 Franklin halves and none of them show that little mark. None of them are a '54 however. Looks to me like the 4 was stamped over a , but the red book makes no mention of such a flaw. I would keep one hand on that coin until I found someone knowledgeable to evaluate it. If it is indeed a mint error and the red book doesn't mention it, it must be VERY rare. Good luck.

I've never found a Franklin half detecting. I do collect them, though. It should be clear to the right of the date. Probably just damage. Nice find!

Yeah probably some sort of damage but I took another look under the glass and it appears to be an extrusion rather than an indentation. Guess I won't know for sure unless a dealer eyeballs it held in hand. The photo I posted was a scan and not high res. Maybe I can try with my camera.

Still hard to tell. Might be a scrape. Maybe from my digger. If it's not in the Red Book chances are it's just damage of some sort. A flaw like that would certainly be on record somewhere.

Nice hunt!:detecting:Congrats on the silver!:beers:Good clad haul!:clapping:Cool token!:thumbup:Thanks for sharing!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

It could be a "1 of" flaw such as an extra piece of silver was on the coin when pressed. I could happen and I know it's happened before. Either way awesome find!

Well Nova, that's always a possibility but..figure the odds. Roughly 43,000,000 to 1. That's about how many they minted in 54. But going back to the "scrape" damage, was thinking if it was my digger that did the deed, the coloration would probably be a lot brighter since it would be fresh. But the squiggly appears to match the coloration of the other numbers and adjacent letters. So it was damage done very early on or it's the 43,000,000 to 1. Reckon I'll run it over to a dealer one of these days but I don't have much hope.
