I found this bullet at the end of an unsuccessful hunt. I'm still researching it but I believe it's a .689 cal. Dragoon. You can see signs of over-ramming the cartride and also there are 12 rifling grooves in the bullet where it's been fired. Can anyone give me any more imfo on it. It is around.720 wide and is around .810 long. It weighs around 35 grams ( not sure what that is in grains conversion ). Any help would be appreciated. HH
Scott

Scott: the "french triangle" (.69) you found was a precursor to the Minie and your was intended for the Model 1857 Infantry or Dragoon French Rifle. However, it looks like it was shot from a .71 caliber weapon with 12 grooves. This would be the:
M1842 Augustin tube-lock Long Rifle (Kammer-Buechse) "Garibaldi";
M1849 Augustin tube-lock Long Rifle (Kammer-Buechse) "Garibaldi";
or the M1842 Augustin tube-lock Carbine (Kammer-Karabiner).
Take your pick...Pretty unusual.

Good observation on the overramming. Forgot to tell you, these Austrian weapons I mentioned had the Delvigne Breech where the bullet was supposed to be expanded by excessive ramrod pressure so they would "take" the rifling. So the bullet was "pounded" into expansion at the breech.

found 1 dropped 3-ring .71 cal. Austrian bullet and a ramrod tip for the same. Would this possibly be the rifle the Dragoon round was fired from. HH

Saw your truck there yesterday late, maybe 4:30. Started to hike up and say hey. Looks like its getting overgrown now. Nice bullet, catch ya later...Jim

underbrush is growing rapidly and will soon have alot of areas un-detectable. Maybe we can hit it next weekend. HH

Scott: Yes..I was hoping you would find some around there. Could you post some pictures of the ramrod tip and give dimensions of the inner, outer and length of the ramrod tip. I use this kind of information all the time. We have the the Fremont conversions of these weapons in central Missouri so we run across them occasionally. Never have see a tip for one. You have a very unusual bullet. I am surprised at the number of "what ever fits" my partner and I have found.

I dug this in eastern Arkansas. It is shot from a smooth bore rifle.
