First finds with my Vaquero

OG

New member
I finally got a Vaquero and I have to say that to this "greenhorn" this thing is amazing. I ground balanced according to directions and some UTube vids and hit my yard. Within minutes I found nails, pull tabs, drill bit, big iron something, clad quarter, 2 clad dimes, 3 copper pennies, 2 newer zinc pennies, a Matchbox truck ( must have belonged to one of my boys ), a small jewelry pendant ( cool but worth nothing ), some cabinet hardware, and a tine from a hay rake. I have also found a half dozen .22 shell casings and a black powder pistol bullet of about .36 cal. I know that these might seem like all trash to you long time MDers but to me they have opened up an awesome new hobby to this retired custodian.
Thanks for all the help members of this forum have been.

In my opinion you picked the best tesoro to start out with. I own several different tesoros and the vaquero is my favorite. My vaquero has found me many great finds including an 1891 seated liberty dime a few days ago. Tesoros are the most fun detectors I have so stick with it and let the finds roll in.

Nice finds to start with , looks like you are hooked

Well, congratulations! Sounds like this hobby was made for you.
Seems most that start the hobby get discouraged real fast when they haven't dug a gold ring or silver cache in the first 15 mins.
Good choice of machine, I made some very nice finds with a Vaquero.

First, it's good that you are working your own yard to learn the Vaquero, and you are digging a broad assortment of targets (different metal/alloy types) and that helps to learn the detector's capabilities and, in time, master the Discrimination settings you feel comfortable with.

Second, did you get a smaller-size search coil for trashier environments? If not, then that would be the next move I would strongly suggest.

It's good that you've started in with a great outdoor hobby. It's kind of sad, however, that you got a late start at retirement instead of years ago to work at it and be more prepared for retirement. I was fortunate to start at a young age (just a couple of months before I turned 16) and had the advantage of much better health for decades of detecting before my health declined (and that was before retirement) to where my detecting is more limited these days.

To help extend my time afield I have been making steady progress at reducing my personal detector arsenal to lighter-weight and more comfortable-to-use detectors. A Makro racer w/small coil, a Teknetics Omega 8500 coming soon, and as noted below, my regular-carry arsenal of my favorite 6 Tesoro detectors.

Enjoy getting out and rely on this Forum for any help you might have.

Hi OG,, KEN here.. It looks like you are having a blast with that thing. Monti, He did get the small coil with the detector. OG, we need to see some pictures. And we do not care if it is junk. If you take it out of the ground, do not put it back in the hole. You do not want to find it again someday. Get yourself some 5 gallon buckets. Separate your junk in the buckets. Iron and steel in one. Copper in another and aluminum in another, ( pull tabs. cut up cans ). Than at the end of the year you can take them to the scrap yard and get a little mad money.. Remember, It is a hobby to have fun with. So get out and enjoy... KEN from Ind.

I tried to upload some pics but failed 3 times, any suggestions? I attempted to put them up in the today's finds section per the rules but I guess I need a 12 year old kid to tutor me on the proper methods of posting pictures. I'll try again.
You're right, I am having a ball.
Thanks again Ken, you are a real stand up guy and a super representative of this hobby, I'm so glad you and I connected.
Thanks also to all who have replied and sent encouraging messages, they are all appreciated.

OG, I had my 12 year old nephew show me how to do it. So dont feel so bad. Sometimes you have to down size the pixels to work right. I dont even know what I said either. That is what my nephew said. Good luck... KEN

OG, well done on the finds, and welcome to the world of metal detecting, a mixture of fascination, frustration, satisfaction, study, and learning new skills and developing new objectives. You can develop ways of involvement in the hobby to keep you thinking and broaden your thinking. Keep up the good work, forget your age, but learn to look after your body and mind....you can still have a long future in metal detecting. HH

my first detector is the vaquero also. got one last spring. it can keep up with the high priced fancy ones all day long.

I use photobucket. Its easy to do. Once you get your photo ready to post here , it gives you four options. I dont know what they all are but the bottom one is the one that works .

Looks like you are already making some decent finds and well on your way learning what different types and sizes of signals sound like:detecting: Good hunting!
