Well this is our first post and second time out with our Ace250. We decided to check out a local elementary school. After some searching we went by the benches and got a hit in all "metal mode". So after some digging we found our first ring which was very exciting. it looks like a childs ring, possibly made in "India" (thats what is written on the inside of the ring). So after that we decided to try couple of other areas and went by the slide and found a quarter, 1 dime and 1 penny. Then found some other benches across the field and found 1 more quarter. We also found this big metal spike looking thing in the same area as of the ring. We're posting a pic. for everyone to see...So it just goes to say Never give up and dig everything.:twodetecting:HH

That's nice you hit coins and a ring already. And that big thing looks big enough to whack the weeds down then used as a digging tool.
If you get into a site so loaded with trash, you might later consider the 4.5 sniper coil. It will get you up closer to the metal playground stuff to. It also gets good depth for a small coil.

If there's a play area with bark chips or ground up tires do there next. Also swing sets and merry go rounds. Lots of loose change and every once in a while a piece of jewelry. As you test grassy areas you'll soon figure out where the kids wrestle and roll around and you'll soon be finding more and more coins. Sidelines of sports fields are also usually hot. Stay off the play area, though.

Those India rings are everywhere. I've never found one that isn't all mangled. Cheap stuff.

It took me a week to really get the hang of my Ace 250 and have my first 50 coin day. Now I have a lot of 100, and even a few 200 coin days and have found a nice pile of gold and silver rings which I never thought would happen when I started. After a month I stopped digging zinc pennies although if an area is slow I sometimes notch them back on. I rarely dig any iron signal.

After you get better go back to where you started and see how much you missed. I found a gold ring on Saturday in an area I did 2 or 3 times at the beginning of the summer. Pretty deep too so I would guess it was there when I started.

Can't wait to see pics of your first gold and silver!

Why stay off the play areas. That's where a ton of rings and jewelry plus coins are found, a lot of it lost by "weekend warriors" who play touch football after school and on weekends..

Most places where I have asked permission to detect have specifically told me to stay off the fields. One place said I could do them in the late fall or early spring as they would be rolled before use. Some have sprinkler sytems they are worried about damaging. A few allow me on the outfield of softball fields which is prime ring territory. I've never been given permission to detect on a soccer or football field proper and I've asked. Almost all mention previous detectorist who have left holes or killed grass. The guy who runs the local AYSO program up here even tried to get me banned from the soccer field sidelines but luckily the town supervisor is a friend. I've gone out and looked but never dug, maybe one or two juicy targets I snuck in.

Just my opinion and I'll bow to your greater experience but I would ask first. I know how bad I felt when I was kicked out of the high school while digging in a construction zone after getting permission from everybody in the world except for the prinicipal. Sent to the prinicipals office after 25 years, figuratively.

Glad I don't live back there. We don't have that problem out here. No permission needed here. Ever walked a football field and seen the damage done by the cleats on football players shoes? Some areas look like swiss cheese. And anybody that doesn't know a sprinkler head from a coin don't need to be detecting. :) I can't believe these places where you need permission to hunt a public school. These schools belong to and are paid for by the public, including the salaries of the peopler who run you off.
