first experience with rude person

I was detecting the strip between the sidewalk and the road all the way down my street and about 4 blocks down there was a church where they were putting in new landscaping and had plowed some of the road and had a pile of dirt, I asked the ladies that were there if it was ok to detect and they said it was ok so I detected the dirt around the edge of the yard and started on the dirt pile on the road leading into the church and there was a guy on a bobcat who was hauling rocks to place around the church, he looked at me and said "Who are you?" in a really rude voice, before I could say anything his phone rang but he still gave me a look like "we're busy here, get out of our way" so I just moved on to the next block.

They are the ones that are no fun. I have only ran into 1 like that myself. You did the best thing by moving on. They will never change their ways. Keep at your detecting and do not worry about his likes, Beale.

Sorry, but I don't take that kind of attitude from anyone. If I have permission to hunt an area,no one is going to run me off.Who is he ? ? ?As long as you are not hindering his work in any way,he can bug off.If you are uncomfortable detecting while he is around, return later after he has left.Hope you find some nice coins at that place.

I;ve run into people like that myself,, My thoughts are they dont want you finding anything that they themselves wont find,, just a pet therory of mine

I'm not your average guy in this cituation.

I'm an old retired surveyor and have run

rough-shod over many a construction sites.

I would have ate that boy's lunch.

HH,

it happens. i have had parents at a park talking about how i was making them nervouse while i was detecting the playground because they didnt want near thier kids ....

Give a kid a coin you find while he or she is watching.

They'll run off. Then there will be three liks wanting a penny.

After a while, you'll have a majority of supporters.

Amazing how that works sometimes.

Any other time you couldn't give them a bucket full of pennies.lol

HH,

When someone asks me in a rather rude tone, "WHO ARE YOU?", my favorite answer is "YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE!" That usually 'breaks the ice', we both laugh and converse for a few minutes. But if he or she gets even ruder and they come back with "How so?" or "You and what army?" Then I say something along the lines of "I'm smarter than you, I'm better looking than you and I don't have to work today!" 90% of the time, that gets a laugh and things lighten up. There are those times that it can get ugly and it is better to move on. But what happens when you are on your own property? One day, the builder who was building the house next door to us got really rude, and my wife was exchanging him 'tit for tat'. Finally, she told him, "You have one UGLY butt crack, you need to keep it hidden to keep from embarrassing yourself!"

yes that is so true. that happens everytime i am at the park it seems. although i have had a few wonderful children step on my detector, try to grab it from my hands wanting to try, and take my finds out of the hole and go bury it somewhere else then tell me to see if i can find it again. they have also tried to grab my screwdriver and stuck thier hands in the hole while i was digging.....all while the parents sit back and watch the wonderful learning experince their children are having.......but there are some that are great kids...they respect what you are doing. those are the ones i give the pennies to....

I've had a few rude remarks made to me when hunting sidewalk strips. Home owners seem to think that strip is theirs. I'm usually polite when pointing out to them that the strip is actually the cities, but do move so as not to create a situation. On more then a few occasions, though, home owners have actually asked if I would like to detect their yard. In the older parts of town, I always replied with a big YES.:bouncy: HH jim tn

I usually shoot them 3 times and bury them in the hole I was digging.
Just kidding!
I just move on.
When detecting near little kids. It is iffy I always look to see where mom is and stay away from Jr if mom is not close. If mom is close I tell her please do not let Jr walk bare feet because I have dug up nails, razor blades and other sharp objects. I sometimes have a nail or sharp object from the site and show it to them. It seems to defuse the situation right nicely. Z

A good reply out on the beach when asked wacha looking for I reply that I am a government agent looking for old land mines and unexploded ordinance. That usually thins out the audience somewhat.

Ya don't mess with the Tabdog!!:hot:
You did the most prudent thing as others have said, just move on, at least until that dude parks his bobcat!:surrender:

I finished going down to the end of the street and back up the other side, by the time I got back to the block the church was on they had leveled out the dirt.

That works well for me Jer.

I'm always quick to pull out all the unbelievable things I find.

My good finds stay in my watch pocket.

I am more proud of my trash than my good finds.

I seldom show a stranger my good finds in a large park.

If the parent knows your removing dangerious objects,

and can see it for her self, you have just made a friend.

You then have the run of the place and the mom will usually

scold her child for trying to grab your coil.

It helps to be an old bald headed far+ like me.

no one has said anything to me about detecting the sidewalk strips yet, I think I am the only one around here who detects so they mostly just ask if I have found anything or say "my mom or dad or relative used to do that" I try to be respectful and avoid areas of the strip where the person may have built a small flower garden or something.

those of you who have run a bobcat or any other peice of equiptment probably realize this mans concern, they are dangerous, point blank! you cannot see behind you very well and if he was unable to keep you in his sights full time then you were probably slowing him down and was probably concerned about the possability of running over you. not good! plus he never would have never heard you scream over the bobcat, thats probably why the attitude, cement mixers are replaceable(oops!) people are not! so please be careful! HH!

I understand that, he didn't have to be so rude about it though.

personality flaw, some people just don't know how to be civil about matters, with out yelling till they go crosseyed
i get some looks sometimes, but i just tell myself that the joke is on them!
although i was confronted once by a scronney little fellow whos mouth preceded himself, trying to explain to me how i was stealing!
the place i was hunting was open to the public, hunters everywhere, shot and shell must have been two inches thick, and there was surface trash everywhere, guess it's alright to leave stuff but not take!
