First Excal Water Hunt= Silver Crown!

Goldak

New member
Silver crown ring actually. After a couple of dry sand hunts with the new Excal II, I ventured into the fresh water with it. I only had about 2-3 hours but it was enough time to get better acquainted with the detector and its capabilities. I hunted mostly in "discriminate" mode and dug all signals. I didn't find many coins but did manage to find a hefty silver ring. It looked like a "junker" at first but it sure looked nice after I cleaned it!

I cleaned the ring by carefully heating it with a torch and then quenching it in a pickling solution. I then polished it up using a soft towel and some Wright's silver cream. HH!

Great Ring !!! Nice cleaning job. What is in your pickling solution ? What temperature does the ring and solution have to be ?
Thanks

I used a propane torch and "Pro-Craft pickling compound". You don't have to heat the object too much- you certainly don't need it to be glowing red or you might damage the piece. Heat the item evenly without applying too much heat to one spot and keep the "flame" off the metal. Quench immediately. The solution was at room temperature. Good luck! HH!

WOW!!!! What a difference from what color it was
to how it looks in the last picture. Very nice job
on the ring find and the cleaning. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:
