First ever on my hunt today!

Cool!

Do you consider that a good experience or a bad one? I love to take excursions in the wilderness to photograph wildlife and landscapes. My friends always say "but what if you see a bear?" as if it were a bad thing.

I've come across black bears on many occasions and have never had a bad experience with one. Of course, as long as you give the animal a respecful distance buffer and don't harass it you will most likely walk away with a good memory of the experience.

Congrats

In 1985, I was in Alaska for 45 days, hunting, fishing, and prospecting. A friend of many years, who was a guide up there, gave me some sage advice, which I carry to this day.....

When in Bear Country.....ALWAYS have the ability to stop the bear.

Today, whether it is a two legged, or a four legged bear, when I am out detecting, I carry (with a CHL) my 9mm or my .45 ACP. At 53, I can't run very far. I have detected for 32 years, and have employed the stopper on two occasions, when I was interrupted from my peaceful detecting by the 2 legged variety of bear.

Both times, they ran, not me. So, that brings me to a question.....do any of you carry either a pistol, or at least bearstop? Just curious.

Dennis who is too old to run very fast....

I've been known to carry while in the wilderness (Wyoming, Colorado etc.) but not while metal detecting. The areas where I detect are basically farms in Washington Co, MD and Berkeley Co, WV - not really bear country. There are a few around but it's highly unlikely that I will run into one while detecting. The biggest danger there is angry skunks and groundhogs

Where did you see the bear? I hunt all over Hanover and certainly don't want to run into one of those!!

He means this:

I couldn't find "Bear Stop" or "Bearstop" specifically, but you get the idea. Looks like it would be good for stopping just about anything.

He was prolly diggin all the relics. Gotta watch those Bears, they're relic hogs :) I hear you guys are getting a lot of Bears on the coast. I think N'Jersey is considering bringing a season back to control the large numbers they're getting. Good hunting, David

The folks we bought our property from last year told us that neighbors had spotted a black bear out in the woods behind our place over the years.
I lost a gas model airplane back there last June and ventured into the thickest part, it's no more than 300 yards behind our house. Never found the plane but did see fresh bear scat and actually ran across a den and old foot prints.
The bear has never shown it's face, not yet anyway, maybe it's because we have huge dogs on the property and I take them with me when I go out there ?

or looking for food. You might consider carrying a .44 pistol while out hunting in the woods, especially if your alone. I usually carry a 9mil but we don't have any bears, just wild hogs. John

but only if out in the woods or in the bad section of any town, not if hunting where there are lots of people around. Never can be too safe nowadays. HH John

Actually, I meant the product at UDAP: http://www.udap.com/

I carry the largest can they make. Go to the site, and look at some of the pics. The difference in this product, is the spray, which is a fog, rather than a stream.

Sorry about the mixup. But i SWEAR it used to be called Bear Stop.
