First detector

I am brand new to detecting and want to make the right choice buying my first detector. Any advice on which one to buy. Don't want to spend a lot the first time around. Will be using it at the beach and parks etc. Thanks for any help

I started with a Whites Prizm IV 3 years ago and still have it and use it a lot. It does very well on the beach and land finding coins and jewellery. It's very stable with reasonable depth for a fixed ground balance unit, and I like the single and triple tones. This detector is a beauty for me to use in single tone for the time I feel like digging-it-all. Unfortunately, there is only two coils compatible for the Prizm series, so it makes a good backup to my X-Terra 50.

Another option is to start with an M6 which has a wider selection of coils and has good ground balancing capabilies. I'm sure others can fill you in better on this detector as a starter unit. JMHO

Buy the best White's detector you can afford. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Hi there just thought i'd share my experiences of detectors with u.I have owned a lot of detectors including many of the top models costing hundreds of pounds from the likes of minelab,xp and tesoro and to be honest they have all found a lot of good finds. However, recently i wanted a detector that would be stable on wet salt sand(having sold all my previous suitable models) and also be a good back up to my favourite inland detectors.I decided on the Matrix M6 as i had read some good reports on it and it was'nt to expensive.I can honestly say that this detector has now become my firm favourite because of it's ease of use and top notch performance.....it performs as well as any so called top model from any manafacturer and it's far more reasonably priced.A beginner will be able to use this machine easily straight out of the box and will never outgrow it.It works very well on the beach even in the wet sand and it is very good in high trash areas.I just wish i had tried this machine earlier as it would have saved me a lot of money.....i feel quite embarassed about the amount of money i've wasted on so called top machines when i could have bought the M6 and had the same(or in some cases better)performance for half the price. The M6 may be called a beginners machine, probably due to the fact that it's got no bells and whistles and it's so easy to use,but don't let that put u off because this machine is a top performer in it's own right.
