First detector, MXT! New member today.

I have been wanting to metal detect for many years, today I bit the bullet. I advertised on our local radio forum for a whites mxt. Having read about them for years this is what i wanted. I got a call a half hour later from an elderly gentleman who had an mxt he bought 4 years ago but never used. He said his wife through some pennies in the driveway and he found most of them and that was it. He put it in the closet until he heard my ad. It came new in the box with the pointer, headphones and a few videos. All for $500.00 I think it is a good deal providing whites has not changed anything to improve on it and make mine an old model.I live in Alaska and a friend of mine has a gold claim for me to play in. The MXT should fit the bill fine for that and other types of searching. I am watching videos and reading this forum to learn as much as possible before i get out there. It is snowing today and everything is still frozen so I have a month or so before i can hit the gold fields and sand lots.

Hi Greg and welcome to the forum. You can find a treasure of information here about gold hunting with the MXT. You got yourself one nice machine and at a great price also. If you go to the "search" menu and type in "gold nugget", you should get a lot of info in the past posts. Hillbilly Bob is one great guy who would use his MXT for finding that gold and he was darn good at it. He would post on here his finds and he had many wonderful specimens. I wish we could get in contact with him, but no answer. I wish you luck and keep us posted. HH, Nancy

"BEST" as in the best value for the dollar invested; BEST so far as full power performance in an easy-to-control model; BEST bargain from White's for a serious "nugget hunting detector" as well as general-application "fun detector" for coin and relic hunting. I am not a big fan of flash and fancy preferring function and simplistic operation for more fun-time afield.

All you really need to compliment the MXT with a stock 950 coil is one smaller coil and a spare rod. I'd keep the 950 mounted on a lower rod for quick changes afield, and mount up a smaller coil for full-time use. My personal favorite for the MXT is the 6

Ditto what Monte said. I like the 5.3 and the little "shooter". Welcome to the forum.

Your research paid off. You picked a great machine. My personal favorite smaller coil to compliment the stock coil is the 6x10 DD. Congratulations on a great deal and choice.

I will research the two more but have decided my new coil will be either the 6x10 DD or the 5.3 eclipse. I'm glad those of you suggested what I had been thinking, shows i'm on the right track. All I need is some good weather ie: snow melted from my area and I'm ready to go. Any book suggestions?

The MXT Edge by Jeff Foster is a good read. Many of us have it and it's a great reference book to read over and over. Larry will be getting in a few next week. You're on the right track for sure. You'll like either of those two smaller coils. My personal choice is the 5.3". JMHO, Nancy

Welcome to the forum, there are a lot of great helpful people on here. Good luck with the new hobby, its a blast!

I just found the book The MXT Edge on e-bay and bought it. Said he only had one. Should be here in a week. I guess i'll read the owners manual again, and again,......

If it was essentially never used except to find a few pennies then that was $500 well spent.
You got yourself a great detector.

No Katz, it was never used. Well, his wife through three or four pennies out in the driveway and he tried to find them. That was it! He put it in the closet until I bought. The pointer II was still in the original box also with the battery it came with still wrapped in plastic. The headset was in the same condition. I'm pretty excited for the weather to warm up and thaw the ground.
