First day with the Explorer 11

Start out in Quickstart...raise the sens. to 20 and adjust threshold to you liking...I would suggest going this route for about a month till you get on your feet. Even in Quickstart its a real good unit...
Practice your pinpointing as it can be maddening...Don't let the miniature telephone book manual scare you and even when you get out of quickstart don't get fancy and if you can find a competent Explorer user perhaps from your club you will learn it quicker. The secret to an Explorer is going slow and learning the tones...Good luck in your ventures and remember no stupid questions just fellows stupid enough not to ask them as the forum has a lot of old pros...

It is no one in my town that has a explorer, but a friend is coming this week to help from another town. I'm using the X-5 coil on it for the trash and like the iron mask with the digital. I had it set wrong , I had it set on -16 ( that was fun) it picked up all the rust and little iron, so know I have it on -6 and sen. on 22 and looks like it is doing a lot better. Thanks for the INFO.

I hunt -16 all the time. BUT It is not for the beginner. Set yours to -10 or -12. -6 is too low, you will miss too much. Switch to Ferrous sound, this way iron will grunt and coins will be higher pitched so as to get your attention. MOST importantly is you need to keep the coil on the ground, Explorers don't like air between the coil and ground. MORE importantly is move at a snails pace. You really need to move slow with the Explorer to let it sniff out the finds. Use the digital screen and get used to the numbers. I reccomend digging EVERYTHING at this point, this way you can see the numbers and then dig the target. This way when you see a 3-28 you will say to yourself "probably a dime" or 7-24 "Maybe an old copper or maybe a screw-on aluminum bottle cap". Have fun, just don't get frustrated trying to change too many settings at first.

I agree with the -10 to -12 setting for iron mask. That setting should make it quiet over iron trash and take out most falses. Mike M. still uses -10 and he has great success. I still use conduct sounds. HH
