First day with E Trac yields first ever silver coin

Just got back from my business trip today and my new E Trac had arrived. I am a rookie at metal detecting so I was excited to get started. I put it together and went outside in my yard and gave it a whirl. Within an hour I had found four coins. 2 pennies ('68 and '61), 1 nickel ('64) and my first ever silver dime ('54). I can't wait to learn this machine and do some serious hunting!!! I can see already that sound plays a major part with metal detecting as the sound the dime made was not even close to the other sounds I heard in that hour. It just popped! Attached is a picture of the 4 coins. I can't believe how clean the dime is compared to the others...does the silver have something to do with that?

I have one other question. I had a couple hits in the 12-41 range that were crisp and clear. However, the depth gauge didn't move at all. I dug the first one down to roughly 4 inches thinking it might be another penny. Nothing was there. I ran the E Trac over the hole and it still showed the #'s but with no depth again. I ran into this 2 other times as well but didn't dig them. What is this?

Grats on the first silver of many! Silver comes out clean like that most of the time. 12-41 is usually a wheat penny for me. How deep did the depth gauge say it was?

That's the weird part...the depth gauge was reading like it was sitting on top of the grass. I moved around the target and tried swinging the E-Trac in a different path with the same result, good crisp sound with the depth gauge reading like it should be sitting on top of the grass.

Very nice work! I am getting the feeling you'll be finding a way to take your detector along on some business trips...I do!

If the sound was loud and repeatable then it was more than likely a penny just out of your site, maybe an inch or less below the surface . Use your pin pointer to locate it. Also if your using the pro coil it will pick up that surface coin a few inches away from the outer outside ring of the coil if your sensitivity is high. Using pinpoint will zero right on it. If you had a X1 sunray probe you could use that to find hidden surface items. Its the best add on I got with mine.

yep I agree, it is most likely a coin laying an inch or two from where you cut the plug

congratulations on your first ever silver coin! that shine of silver is what makes your heart skip a beat when you see that beauty against the dark soil. pinpointing super shallow targets can be tricky at first, youll get the hang of it.

Great finds. The Silver makes it. Small pieces of elongated copper wire close to the top of the ground will throw your pinpointing off. Next time check the sides of the whole.

Congrats on your first Silver, welcome to the forum and good luck with your new machine !

Thanks for all the input. I had the same thing happen yesterday and did find a target on the side of the hole like Rolladex mentioned. I was able to find 3 Wheat pennies and a ring yesterday. I can't believe what's in my yard, and that's just the front yard! Who knows what's lurking in my backyard. On top of that, my house backs up to about 5 acres of woods.

I ordered my E Trac with the accessory bundle from Hollands Brook Metal Detectors. When it arrived, the box only contained the E Trac, not the accessory bundle. This threw me for a loop. They did send me and email saying that I had a $320 voucher to purchase whatever I wanted so I duplicated the accessory bundle. When I was checking out it said that the Garrett Pro pointer was in backorder...bummer! I can't wait to get the pin pointer as I can clearly see where this will speed up my recovery times.

Again, thanks for all the input.
