Sorry for the long post. I have some questions and I underlined them for people that don't want to read the entire post.
Well I got to try a PI machine (first time)today on the NJ beaches. They are heavily hunted and being sanded in and not allot of traffic since summer I was not expecting much. So for those thinking of an Infinium here is a PI newbie's view. (btw only got one earring and some clad which was red so it's been there a while, the rest was junk);
- I now know why you read about bobby pins so much from the PI guys, my first target was one and it was well over a foot deep, I could not believe it. And just for the record it was not the last, I lost count on how many I dug and man some of them were deeeeeeep. The myth about dimes at 15"+ is not a myth, I saw it with my own eyes today.
- My six inch scoop is not going to cut it with this machine, trying to dig a hole 15"+ with a six inch scoop got old quick. I actually have some questions for people who have some experience on this. 1) What is a good (long handle) scoop to get for the holes you need to dig with this thing? 2) What do you guys do to catch the smaller items that this detector gets like bobby pins. I was only in ankle deep water with it and I could not imagine being in anything deeper trying to get one out.
- Because it is a sound only machine you could tell when the targets were deep very easily. You have to slow down with this machine and really listen to the threshold, sometimes hearing the threshold change and then going back very slow and scraping the coil across the sand allowed me to find some very deep targets. I dug many targets that I pretty much new were bad with double tones, one way signals and garbled edges (not crisp). I still dug them because I believe it is a necessity to learn this machine.
- I had several deep targets that I simply just lost. Even once the signal was gone I would continue to scoop the hole to see if I could get it to come back but to know avail. This happened to me on targets that were very deep at the edge of the detectors range. Any tips for dealing with this?
And some final notes: This machine really shines in the wet sand and salt water. It was a monster. Stable as could be and man it went deep. Impressed is an understatement (for the record I have hunted an Excal in the past). I hip mounted the detector and thank goodness. The coil is very heavy. I swing Etracs/Explorers and this thing still gave me a workout. I think I would like to get a straight shaft for it, any suggestions?. The machine is definitely a workout with all of the digging, it is not for the faint hearted, I can not wait until the crowds return to the beaches in the summer.
Thanks for the time, questions and responses welcome.....
