first day out

Hi:
Yesterday was the first day out with a metal detecter ever! I have a Explorer XS and am getting a litle beter at pin pointing and noticed that in my yard that some times I can pinpoint to a 3" area and othe times it seems like the targer is realy long and about 2" wide, then I dig and do not find any thing. I was using the factory settings and on digital. The readings were in the mid 20's.
I may not be diging deep enouf since the frost is every bit of 8".
Also in some of these areas the explorer seems to make a chatering noise.
Thanks,
Cliff
Thanks

It sometimes chatters when there is an overload...a large metallic object. Also, 8" holes may definitely not be deep enough for the target. -Dave

Is it a chatter or a worble ?? A worble is a overload,, like a crushed pop can or large piece of iron....

The pinpoint should ratchet down to a small diameter after a few passes, 3"s is pretty good and if done correctly should be around 3"s or less for coins, rings, and other small items. The deep coins usually pinpoint down to 2" or less for me. If the pinpoint is lengthy and 2"s wide then it may be a surface wire or semi-deep pipe, then again it could be a big silver chain, ya never really know til ya dig.
In digital, I would only dig 6's, 28's, and 30's that are at a half depth meter or deeper until I got a few silver dimes and buffalo nickels in my pouch just so I could get used to the detector, then I would begin to expand my target range for digs. Avoid 31's.
