First day out with the Explorer...

First off I want to say I have heard the whining and crying about weight and balence of the Explorer for over 2 years and I almost bought it. I found the detector to be a little heavier than my XLT but nothing I can't handle, I do swing a 5 pound hammer with one hand sometimes days at a time and that may have something to do with it too. I just got my Explorer yesterday and took it out for about an hour or so, my first dug target was the silver ring (at over 8 inches). I have personaley pounded this park with my XLT, QXT, Classic IDX, 6000di and Soveriegn. I have seen others hit it hard with Garretts, fishers and tesoro's. I walked in and right off the bat I hit the silver ring! I also found this kitty pin and 4 wheats and a 1951 King George canadian penny at 9 inches. I do have a few questions however, I had my sens at 30 and iron mask at -12 and the rusty bottle caps were driving me nuts! I only dug 7 pull tabs and one bullet (22 I think) I did dig 5 bolts and one large screw that read good on my meter. I had some false signals that were very high pitched! I dug to over 10 inches and I couldn't find anything, then re sweped the hole and there was nothing there. Did I have the sens up too high? I would like to hear what you guys think I did right/wrong. I had no problem pinpointing or anything, so far i am very pleased with my new machine! I am looking forward to learning all I can and maybe posting a few silver coins soon! Thanks

may have had your sens to high, when I first get to a site I start out at manual 32 then make my adjustments down till I can get a steady threshold. The very high pitch you were hearing sounds like iron, did the rusty bottle caps hit low right on the screen because thats where they land on mine for the most part but every now and then they will hit high right and fool me.
Learn to trust your ears Randy and the screen second, iron for the most part has a high pitch sound where as silver not so high. Try this Randy, drop your sens down to 25 and iron mask at -10 and see if your still getting fooled by the rusty caps.
A tip that Brian gave me when I first got the explorer was to take a silver dime and tape it to a paper plate and lay it on the ground face down, now do the same thing to a clad dime and penny and see if you can find which plate holds the silver, I also do this with iron, doing this will help a ton on learning the different tones and thats where this machines true power is, being able to see the silver. Don't worry about depth that will be there, most new users me included try and max it out right off the bat and just get more confussed then anything. Keep us posted Randy, I'm interested In how well you do with the explorer in your hunted out parks, I've done well in them, hh

I hope to get out this weekend, I hope the skeeters aren't so bad. They ate me up before! Maybe I can make it down to the camp grounds in the park this time, it's full of junk and most people have givin up on it because of the nails and pull tabs from the camp fires. I have found several rings with the XLT there but the trash is really bad! Do you have the VID numbers for the digital screen? I will play with it and see what I can get with different coins.HH

Don't go trying to crank it up off the bat. The Explorer is not like any other detector out there. For a beginner (even someone who has detected for years) it can be frustrating with all of the sounds. Even turned down some you will be amazed at the depth. Things to try until you get comfortable: 1) Turn the sens down 2) increase the iron mask (lower number) 3) Slow down your sweep speed in trashy (nulling) areas and 4) play around with ferrous and conduct sounds. Try both, I change mine depending what type of hunting I'm doing.
The depthe of the unit is mind boggling. I have a dime at 10.5" in my test garden and the Explorer is the only machine that can clearly get it, believe me a lot of others have tried. Good luck and HH. One last thing, you will find that this is one of the best forums, great information and great people!!!!

I will be hitting the park again in the morning, too much paperwork tonight after work. I know where to come for help when I need it. I just learned to save the settings and load them again, I can understand things pretty well once I have done them 2 or 3 times. I can't wait to get out in the morning! Thanks guys

Randy, as far as the digital screen goes I don't use it, I don't trust it, I use the advance smart screen. Alot of users of the Explorer will tell you the same thing but there are some that use it and do well but the numbers jump around to much and if you have a silver dime sitting below a pull tab the numbers will jump to much and you might pass on digging it.
Now take that same silver dime sitting under that pull tab in iron mask using the advance smart screen it's a whole new ball game, here is where being in iron mask helps your ears hear a hint of silver, you will hear the pull tab but at the same time you might hear that faint sound of silver at the end of your swing as it passes over the target (mixed signal) this gets your attention. Now you look at the screen in advance smart and watch the cross hairs as you swing and see where they hit and land, the cross hairs may jump all around but every now and then they land on silver (high right and half off the top of the screen) in most cases. The Explorer is telling you that you have more then one target under the coil (a mixed signal) but because of the sound (hint of silver) and where the (cross hairs hit now and then) there may be silver down there, hence the iffy target, dig it.
At one site I hunted I had a crappy choppy signal (mixed signal) and almost passed over it but at the end of my swing there was that (hint of silver, cling cling). Turn out to be a pull tab at 2 inches and a Barber quarter, barber dime and Merc dime at 7 inches, all under the coil at the same time and because of the pull tab it at two inches the three silver coins were broken and choppy but still gave me that hint of silver and the cross hairs jumping around but always going back to high right. The standing liberty quarter I found last sunday 1920-d was 6 inches down and sounded like iron but still gave me a hint of silver, it had a piece of iron very small laying within a inche of it (mixed signal), but between the sound and watching the cross hairs I decided to dig.
Once you know what silver sounds like Randy you will be able to pick it out when other targets are in the same area, the silver sound is like no other and once you hear that cling cling you will know it's silver. This will take alittle time but you will master it in time, just give it a chance, you won't reget it. Randy I'm gonna send you a e-mail so look for it, swing slow and let your ears show you the way and the advance smart screen to back up your ears, between the two you are deadly on any site, hh
