First Day out with the C$

I have a few questions. Imagine that on the first day!
I was only out an hour and essentially stayed around a couple of huge oaks near a turn off. I didn't find anything old, but pulled .97 cents in clad out.
I ran Sens at 7, Disc 99, thres 0, grd balanced, averaging off. Foil and tabs notched
I was combining the tone and the numbers when making a decision to dig. I was getting a lot of low tone signals, with numbers in the teens, so I passed on digging them.
When I got repeatable numbers above 20 and a good high tone, i would dig. I was rewarded with several cans and a few bottle caps.
It also appeared that my clad was not very deep.
Questions: can these settings be adjusted to reduce the amount of falsing, and to increase target depth?
If I run a lower thresh (-35, -40, -45) does this reduce my target depth?
I am at a loss with the sens. settings. I can set it at 8-10 without a constant tone, but does setting it lower increase depth or does it matter?
Sorry for the long post but I'm brand new to the C$ and would appreciate any advice from the experts.
Thanks.
Tim

even at sensativity 2, the C$ is still pretty deep. You have to find an equal balance between sensativity & threshold. If running or both to high will cause falsing. If running the threshold to low like -25 to say -40 will cause you to lose a little depth but it will also make the C$ more stable.
I've been using my C$ for about 6 months now and rarely go above 8 on sensativity and also rarely go higher then -15 on threshold. Bill's setting work great for most people most of the time, which is 525 = 5 sensativity & -25 threshold. Some times, I will even run threshold at -40 to quiet the machine down in certain areas.
I would rather lose a little depth and be able to pick out a target rather then being driven nuts by all the falsing.
Good luck,
Mike

Hi TEH,
Questions: can these settings be adjusted to reduce the amount of falsing, and to increase target depth?
Falsing will be reduced if you cut the threshold back to -35 or better, and will still get very good depth if the sens. is ran as high as possible. With a high threshold and lower sens. it goes deep also, but it seems to give me too many good signals on very small shallow trash and falses off iron more in my area. TRY -35 or -45 threshold and sens between 8 and 10 for a day in an area with deep coins and see how you feel about it. A few deep ones will build your confidence in the low threshold settings.

Make sure the ground ballance is right by checking it in all metal mode over a CLEAN patch of ground. Bob the coil straight up and down a few inches, and if you hear anything while the coil is going up or towards the ground, reground ballance again. I've had to do it several times to get it right before.

Thanks a bunch guys. I was getting several tones a swing and it was a little hectic, but once I started combining tone with the numeric value, it wasn;t too bad. I'll try the 525 setting and see where that gets me. I'll also play with the ground balance as well. Some of my areas (southern California, older sites) will allow me to increase sens to the 8-10 range, but from what I hear, dropping the sens lower doesn't impact the C$'s depth much. Thanks again and I'll report my findings and my finds of my next trip out.
