First day out with my "new" X-Terra 70

Two weeks ago I got my used X-Terra 70 from Richard (Backwoods Detectors) and finally I managed to do the first outdoor testing (during the week I am away from home, because of work and last weekend we got snow - first time this year...). I got up early this morning and together with my 8 year old daughter I visited a local park that includes a big playground. We spend a hour and a half detecting and digging holes into the frozen sand... That was real fun, even as we found nothing beside some modern trash. For my daughter everything we found was a treasure and as she detected (after the first 45 minutes I let her swing the detector) the best find of this day (the button) she was really happy. So these are our first finds:

Five bottle caps in different sizes and shapes, two pull tabs, a tea light candle and a child's button.

To be honest, for me the time I spend together with my daughter was the real treasure.

I have to mention that this is my first detector and even my first try with metal detecting. By the way I am living in Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia).

Next Sunday we plan to visit another local park with a playground to practice some more. Maybe we get our first real find. We would be real happy, if we are able to locate a coin, or even a piece of some kind of cheap jewelry. By the way, any suggestion on "how to optimise your detecting on a playground" is very welcome. Do you simple start on one edge of the playground and work your way to the other side, or do you prefer some kind of spot to start with? I found it very difficult to get a good signal. Maybe because there was nothing good hidden in the sand, or because this playground is on the ground of a old closed coal-mine.

However, looking forward to present you next Sunday finds. :twodetecting:
Thanks, Peter

hi there ive found that in around playgrounds its best to run your machine at about 12-16 sesitivity due to the depth the machine goes, u will find if its set too high then u will actually pick up the junk thats underneath it, most coins are usually pretty shallow, also if u have it set too high the machine will pick up the metal playground equipment from close to 2 feet away and thats usally where the coins are, i always grid the play area.

I don't hunt parks, but you should be able to find some clad or a ring close to the surface. Put the machine in 3 or 4 tones and listen for the high tones to weed out the trash. Nickles and gold will register as a low tone, but as you get better, you can pick these out of all the noise. Good luck, it looks like you are having a great time no matter what you find and that's the best attitude to have coming into this hobby. Ron

Getting out with your daughter is a great treasure! I have hunted tot lots most of the time I find coins. I do try to grid it out. Good luck, Beale.

Hape: Looks like you had a great day. There's all type's of treasure's and it sounds like you hit gold, keep it up. No one can take that away from you.

Good Hunting........ Ed

I like to start with the parks, because it's easy to dig there and there should be some clad around, for sure. That makes detecting easy, interesting for my daughter and as a bonus she can play.

After I am more experienced I plan to upgrade to relics. Second reason is that you need a permit for a relic hunt in Germany.
(The authorities try to avoid that you dig in the middle of a stone age cemetery etc. - so you have to let them know about where you plan to hunt...)
It's simply to much history here in the ground. On the other hand you maybe find a coin that is 2.000 years old.

Thx for the warm welcome and see you next Sunday. Peter

I thought about that, as a second step. First I like to see that she is still interested after we detected a couple of times.
On the other hand I think she likes to do the detecting together with we; in some kind of teamwork. A boy in that age would like to get his own machine for sure, searching for his own treasures. Girls are different, but I will ask her in a couple of weeks. Anyway looking forward to do the next hunt. Peter
