First Day Out with Deus 11 coil would like a little help

First I want to say thanks to Bart @ Big Boy Hobbies, he's a great guy and super helpful.

1) I went out to my front yard today for about 2 hours and found a variety of clad coins, but I had a really hard time with 6''X1" rusty pieces of flat iron that must have been from when the house was built 14 years ago. These pieces of iron came in at nice high tones roughly 91-96 on the display. I was running basic-2 and full tones, reactivity 2. Any help on why this was hitting this way would be appreciated. I'm an ex CTX user (Primarily because of weight) and this confuses me somewhat.

2) Also I have read the book twice and still not exactly sure on which frequencies I should use when???

1 positive is that this machine is super fast!!!!!! :) and can't wait to take it to an old 1800's farm house and search the trashy areas.

Thanks in advance,
John

John,

On something that large I would lift the coil off the ground and see how high the target can be detected. You may also want to make an adjacent program in an empty slot that uses 4 kHz - large and deep iron objects will indicate in the 90s at all frequencies but anything non-ferrous will tend to drop in VDI the LOWER frequency you use. For example, a clad quarter will indicate 95-96 in 18 kHz but in 4 kHz the same quarter will ID around 84-85. The larger spread of the lower frequencies also helps with the "dig" or "no dig" determination. Upping the silencer will help a little with some iron targets but remember you lose depth with silencer set at "3" or "4"

If you haven't already make a test garden - this will shorten the learning curve of this detector! Play around with it and introduce trash to varying degrees in with your coins to see exactly what Deus is capable of. I have 16 coins in my test garden but can only hit 9 or 10 of them (but I haven't honestly tried all the combinations to see if these remaining ones could be detected)

Your efforts now will pay off in the long run - but the trip is most enjoyable if you learn to recognize bottlecaps and iron right off the bat! Good luck!
