First Day Detecting

Hi Folks,

I've been reading the posts here for a few days while waiting for my BH Landstar to come by UPS. Well, it showed up late yesterday afternoon and by the time I got it assembled and read through the manual, it was dark. So today, I was able to get out a bit and take my first baby steps in the world of metal detecting. The weather here was chilly, damp and blustery, so I made several ten-fifteen minute trips out into the back yard to see if I could find anything. I got several hits; some must have been ghosts because nothing was there and after digging they never showed up again when checking both the hole or the little pile of dirt I had dug up . I think I may have my sensitivity turned up a little too much... But I did find two items. The first was a heavily corroded newer penny and the second was a rusty nail. Nothing worth talking about at all, but my first finds. Hope to learn how to use the landstar a little better this coming week then hit the school yard/tot lot behind the house. Hopefully, I'll have something to actually brag about after that hunt.

Happy Hunting,
Glenn

Way cool. I'm sure the tot lot will render some clad 4 U. Try school yards, parking strips between the street and the sidewalk, places where old revival meetings took place, locations of old saloons and stores. Do some historical research and find places where people were congregating years ago but may no longer do so. I have had some luck at campgrounds in national forests and state parks. Be sure to check the regulations and replace all divots and fill all holes.

Good luck and have fun.

That tot lot is the perfect place to start. Take a few coins with you and bury them in the chips at 3 or 4 inches. Hear how they sound and you will learn what to listen for. Bury a quarter flat and a foot away bury one on edge and listen for a difference.

Good luck and take care, keep us posted and ask any questions you have. The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked. Lots of good experienced hunters here more than willing to help.
