First competition

I am going to my first competition hunt tomorrow. Does anyone have any tips for comps? I have a XT 705 and a Compadre.

Good luck move fast and recover fast.
Watch out for the mad/fast swingers:happy:
Usually the the coins in the grass are less than two inches
deep and if you can find the slith mark ( angle ) its just a matter
of lifting the sod and pluking the coin.
Enjoy the hunt and meeting new friends.

Is it a beach hunt or grass? I've never been to grass hunt, but do beach hunts every year. short scoop,a speed basket, and don't bother looking at your finds until the huints over!! Good Luck

Use the Compadre.

Depth and/or disc usually are not an issue. Speed and quick recovery are, so go with the lightest, fastest responding detector you have which may well be the Compadre. Don't lose time by taking too long to recover a target. If you haven't recovered it soon, move on. Good Luck and have fun.

This is how I won first place in a club competition hunt. I wore the apron on my leg just above my ankle so I wouldn't have to stand up and place my find in the apron. I use the "magic eye" method of pinpointing- I freeze my eye on the spot on the ground where the detector beeps when the center of the coil goes over it-sometimes only two sweeps and as Joel said, you may be able to see the slit when you eyeball this spot. Most people walk and detect-sometimes missing 2 feet at a time! Practice to get as close a overlap you can stand and only step whenever the sweeping of the coil several times CAUSES you to be unbalanced and you have to move forward. Pretty soon it will become natural and you will FEEL like you are walking and detecting but you won't miss as much ground. Whenever you finish your last sweep, lay the coil on the ground and simply walk around it and go the other way as parallel as possible to the last area you searched. Finally, if you can discipline yourself enough, look for openings others have missed or skipped while you were hunting and you'll always have something going. Best of luck.

Machineman,Bring both detectors, this will give you one for a backup. If this is the one on the 18th of August I'll be there.Trying to persuade Elton to attend. Good Luck Ron
