First Class Ring Found (long):

Nancy-IL

Well-known member
Larry and I went to my old high school and this time I was on the athletic field without my teacher. Boy did that bring back some memories. I loved P.E. and sports. Big Foot was attached to my MXT and I was ready to go. First off I went to where our class would play baseball. Hit a few targets and then one sounded off. I dug a horseshoe plug, pulled it away and I could see gold and knew it was a class ring. I wiped off the ring and could read 1974. OH MY!!! ONE CLASS YEAR AHEAD OF ME!!! (Oops, just told my age) Names were going through my mind. I knew it would be fairly easy to find the owner. My class was the largest of all and we had only 67 students. When we left the athletic field, we stopped at the Washburn Library to look at the year book. My books are in storage. J.E.?. were the initials. There were three female names that started with a J. I call the one that I was hoping was the ring and BINGO!!! She had lost it shortly after she got it. Well, she didn't, but her boyfriend did. I don't know who was more tickled. Me or her!!! Hopefully this weekend she'll have her class ring back on her finger. She lives up by Chicago and is about a 2+ hour drive. Well, here it is and I have also added the email she had sent and from the boyfriend that lost it. Thanks for looking and HH to all, Nancy

Jaclyn's Email:
Good story:
Nancy Brook, Larry's sister, and formerly from Lowpoint called me today. She and her husband have a hobby of metal detecting. They were at the Lowpoint-Washburn athletic field and while scanning the field, came across my class ring under four inches of grass and dirt. In 1972, Steve Schepper and I were "going steady". I had his class ring, but I was hesitant of giving him mine since I was afraid he's lose it. He talked me into it and within days (maybe hours)...he lost it. We searched the ball diamond where he thought he lost it, but we never found it. Nancy said it was in the area where the girls had PE. I'll be so excited to see it again since I barely had a chance to wear it in high school. I was a sophomore when it was lost. When I told my brother, Mark, his first response was 'didn't Shep lose that ring almost as soon as you gave it to him?'.
It's nice that we have a happy ending, isn't it? Thirty-six years later.
Thank you, Nancy, for finding the ring and sending the pictures.
Jaclyn

Steve's (her boyfriend back then) Email:

To all....

What can I say after all these years?

When Mark called tonight to tell me "somebody found something" my first thought was that I was in trouble. What did the Parkside Gang do that was finally discovered? Were parts of someone's bike found in the log cabin from the time we all rode through that dinner?

For a brief moment I hoped it was the script to "The Odd Couple" Mrs. Scheirer (sp?)accused me of losing from speech class. I had to pay $2.00 despite Shelby's testimony that I had indeed turned it in. But I digress.

I want to apologize to Jaclyn (again) for having lost her class ring. I don't remember having to convince her to let me keep it, but I'm sure she and Mark have much better memories than I. However, I KNOW I had the ring for at least a week before I lost it!! Why didn't I just buy her a new one? Cheapskate....

I do, of course, have fond memories of going steady with Jaclyn. Why she didn't dump me there and then is a mystery.

It appears from the picture to be in remarkable condition. I may have actually done Jaclyn a favor by losing it. Do any of you know where your class ring is? Does it look this good? I ended up losing mine in Crow Creek while tubing. Nancy, can you check into that for me??

Anyway.... life is full of wonderful surprises isn't it?

Signed: The ex-boyfriend...... Schep

ps Anyone want to schedule a reunion? I'd love to see everyone again. I wouldn't trade anything for even one minute of my
time spent in Washburn.

What a wonderful way to get back in touch with old classmates!!!!! Thanks again, Nancy

Way to go Nancy. I'll bet you feel really good getting it back on the owners finger especially after all these years. :clapping::clapping: HH Dennis in Idaho

I love reading stories about the returning of class rings and the feeling of the person that lost it. These are memories we never forget as long as we live with some great memories and some not as good.
I always try to return them as it makes a person feel so good and regret not trying to return one ring I found and sold it for scrap gold when gold was high back in the early 80s (got $100 for the ring). Last ring I returned was a class of 1943 about 4 years ago and I was able to find the guy that lost it and he too had only had it for a short time when he lost it in a ball field playing ball. The story was he saved for quite a while for it and didn't have enough so his mother gave him some of her egg money she got from selling eggs so he could get it. He said he never told his mother he had lost it and always told her it was up in his room. He has since passed away and I am glad I was able to return it before he passed away.
Your story I bet brought lot of memories from you school days, even did for me when I read your story as so many people traded rings when they went together back then too and I still hear of all those that have been lost.

Good story Nancy and I bet you are feeling good about finding it and finding the owner, but the real joy will be when you can see the expression on the person face when you give it back, IT IS PRICELESS!!!

What a rewarding find for everyone involved!! Another positive side of our hobby. Happy for you all.
By the way, do you recall what VDI the ring rang at? Thanks in advance if you post.

Some things in life have no price, for every thing else......

thank you Nancy for making our hobby look good. Isn't is great to be able to give someone something back that they've given up as lost forever? It's hard to beat the MXT for finding lost rings. I've got 6 detectors and when I'm asked to find a ring I always grab the MXT.

It all comes out in the end. This hobby is so much more than people think it is. Sometimes it's "priceless". What a joy. Thanks everyone for your comments. But I know you would do the same with a class ring, or anything identifiable that you found. It's a special feeling. HH to all, Nancy

We delivered the class ring to it's owner Sunday, July 6th. She couldn't stop smiling. What a joy to be able to return it to her after being lost for over 36 years. Hope everyone had a good 4th of July! HH to all, Nancy

Well Nancy, now its my turn to say..thanks for sharing! Simply great!

What a great hobby! You get the thrill of finding something really special, then the thrill of returning it to the one who lost it! Thanks for the story and pictures! BTW, what reading did you get on this gem? Just curious to see if I'm leaving some things undug!

It was a solid 28 on the VDI and I she said the stone is a Citrine and was purchased at a jewelers. Thanks and HH to all, Nancy
