First big silver tonight :)

Made dinner, ate, and with an hour of so of light left I decided to hit a local park that's produced a little bit of silver for me this year. Only had about 40 minutes or so to hunt really. Well, I hit a couple of clad and then decided to just listen for deepies and pass up on the clad. Wasn't really hearing much and it was getting pretty dark, so I headed back to the car. Fortunately, whenever I'm walking back to the car, no matter how fast I'm walking, I always swing. Well, I heard this nice little tone and went back to investigate. For you Exp guys, it was an 00-27 but not "flutey"... just solid. It was fairly deep so I decided to dig my last target of the night (considering I couldn't see much). Dug down a good bit and i could tell the target was pretty big. I thought for sure it was a crushed bottle cap (dang, they sound good), but i was in it til the end :). I was down about 8" or so and flipped over a final clump of dirt onto my towel. I couldn't believe my eyes! A '52 Franklin half. Whoo hoo! First half ever! Between me thinking it was trash and the dark, I think I poked ol' Ben to the right of his face. Oh well.... haven't done that too often. Next time I'll be more careful. :)

WTG - they sure are hard to find. I always swing while walking and have dug a few goodies also. Why not - Steve in so az

WTG Joe! That is right where they should hit too! I have two walkers and two barber halves, and they were all 27 on the ID! Congrats! :)

WTG on the "big silver"
After 9 years of detecting I've found 2 silver halfs. One was a walking liberty with "nicks" all around the edge on both sides. I think it must have been on a neckless and fell out. It was found at a school that wasnt as old as the coin. The other was a franklin next to some sidwalks the were new but they hadnt grass seeded yet. It was found in Florida.
I think I've found 2 or 3 non silver ones also.
Hard to believe they can sit on the ground and not have someone no see it

I've been gridding and re-gridding this one area of the park where I've been picking up wheaties and a silver here and there. It's almost like there's a line in the ground where once you pass it, you pick up real deep clad, soda cans and lots of junk. It must have been filled in at one time cause even the dirt looks different. However, in this one area, there's not as much trash and the dirt has a very different texture and it's darker. I've been going slow and skipping on shallow stuff while concentrating on deep signals. What I can't believe is that I missed this one the many times I've been over the same area. We've had a tremendous amount of rain over the last week or so, so maybe that helped. It was a good tone and repeatable but not the sustaining flutey tone the few silver I've found sounded like. Didn't really "ring out" that long on each swing but it sounded too good to pass up. I'll sure remember what the half sounded like for future reference :)
