Well, took the wife's Christmas present out for a hunt (gone shopping
This is a Classic II SL I picked up off Craigslist yesterday for $50...
Brand new unit about 3-4 years ago, said he used it once for about 5 minutes and it has hung on a hook in the garage since... Still has the original batteries in it and they are still good... The unit shines like a new nickel..
Went over to our other farm... Farmhouse is early 1900's... Started working the yard but quickly discovered that when they put aluminum siding on, the trimmed ends ring just like a coin and no amount of tinkering with the settings and sensitivity would discriminate... And the siders threw hundreds of the pieces everywhere and it has been enough years that they are well under the grass - arrrrghhhh
OK, so wandered down the lane at the fence line (nearly a half mile) until I spotted a large cement post that was the corner of the fence line around the 40 acre wood lot next door... Figured on a hot summer day they would sit up against the post and take a break... Started going around... Found a few short lengths of fence wire - 3" or so, the discriminator was making the beeps diddle so figured that out and quit digging them... Was walking back to the car when I got a solid signal...
(Is that the way it always works - just as you give up?)
I was suspicious but kept swinging it and lifting up an inch at a time... Got to 6 inches high with the sensitivity back off and was still getting a nice sharp chirp... Started digging (heavy sod and tree roots and hard to dig)... A good 4 inches down found what looked like a rectangular block of iron coated with mud... Oh well, tossed it in the trunk... After I got home ran the hose over it and it turns out to be a rifle clip - looks like an M1 Garand - with 4 rounds of 30-06 round nose still in it... The metal clip is heavily corroded and the spring loaded shoe under the rounds is immoveable... The rounds look almost normal...
Further down the lane found a pair of .270 rifle cases... And at the end of the fence line dug a good 7 inches down to find a big piece of pipe, heavily corroded - back in the woods a half mile from the nearest buildings ?!? Finally quit at that point...
So, did not find much of any thing but had a good time...
denny-o
