First 4hrs with CTX 3030

Buried Crap NJ

New member
The first 4hrs with the CTX 3030 well the first hour was a disaster. I am coming over from a Excalibur and GT. I did have 63 targets and two were silver dimes. 21 quartes. I have never own one of these multi level space invaders tone machine. Can be quite confusing at first. My little instruction with dealer had me just set the sensitivty as high as the beach would allow. I have no clue what anything is on the machine. I can't find menus program, I managed to get the numbers big on the screen, that was about all I could see with Polarized sunglasses! Working in the direct sunlight is a issue for going though menus. It is a tone machine and once you learn the tones It will be ok.Being able to dig every suspect target and see Numbers and hear the tone is a great way to speed the learning curve.(beach) I made use of the wireless phones and pulled the headphone cord three times when bending. Pinpointing is not easy even with the pinpointer switch. I get the target out of the hole only to chase it about the beach(sometimes 6 more scoops) that really cuts down on target count.I pull the PP switch and I get little tone. I thing I detuned it by being to close to target?? Not ever using a detector with FE/CO numbers can be really confusing. Most of the good target dug fell between 10-?? and 13-?? the same targets repeat well, both in numbers and tone. I did talk with a E-trac guy at Gold Diggers and he purchassed one for land use only as he felt this machine is better than the E-trac on target seperation? I did dig a nickel with a rusted nail same scoop! Any advice would be a great help. I kinda figure by error that the good bad line is around 15 and its your choice to dig 16-??, but they had very baratone tone, most of the times this was copper sheets! Confused about the really low numbers 01-?? or 04-?? they had a pretty good tone. I think it was bits of copper as they washed away in waves.I am very happy with the unit and it will take some time to figure it all out.

Even without any gold it doesn't sound like that bad of a day, you got some silver :clapping: If this is your first machine like this don't try to over complicate for the first couple of hunts. It may seem overwhelming but there really isn't that much in settings to play with once you get your discrimination setup up the way you like. Some things to think about:
-Make sure you removed the screen protector, the machine does not look like it has one but it does. If you did try adjusting the backlight to see things better.
-If you do not like all of the tones you can move to 4 tones, 2 tones, 1 tone or any combination. You want to get these to your liking because sound is what you want to hunt, not the screen. You want to use the screen once you have honed in on a target. The ctx has some grunt tones for the lower co number targets (left to right), raising them up helps a lot of people
-Pinpointing is very accurate on the unit, move the coil completely off the target before you press the button, move your coil back and forth in pinpoint and the forward and backward to make a cross. The target will be under that center.

If you want some help with the machine let me know, we can meet up for a beach hunt. You will be amazed how fast the machine gets easier to use if you have someone to help you out in the beginning even just for a while.

Hey Buried...its Jimmy the guy you met at GoldDigger. My first 2 hours yesterday yielded 2 silver quarters...a 1908, and 1926. You didnt do too bad IMO on your first hunt. Of course I will pick it up easier since I have used the Etrac but hang in there, it will get easier. Well a 4-48 to 4-50 can sometimes be a large cent or big piece of copper. The 01-45 to 01-50 can be a silver dollar or very deep coins beyond the detectors NORMAL range. Send me a message and I will give you my number if you need any help
