first 100 silvers

I recently tagged and bagged my 100th silver, mostly with the Explorer, mostly in parks, and thought it would be interesting and instructive to check out the tally, here's the breakdown:
4% halves, 1 barber, 3 walkers
18% quarters, 13 washington,3 SLQs, 2 barbers
77% dimes, 44 mercs, 29 rosie, 4 barber
1 half dime, capped
I mostly run in iron mask and it seems I get more bigger and newer coins than I should. Not that that's a big problem but it seems like I should have a few more barbers and seated in there (although I do find large cents and indianheads quite often). Seeing that I graduated from a beep and dig detector, I have a feeling I'm still relying too much on getting a "solid" signal and not digging enough questionable signals. This year I have less time to hunt and I'm going to try and get more oldies. I purchased a pair of Killer B headphones not thinking that they would really make a difference, but I already dug a few silvers that were hardly identifyable, definitely not a satisfying signal but barely and I mean barely audible. I also plan on hunting IM -16 more often, and targeting the real old sites. Any more suggestions on increasing my real old coin ratio?

I feel I have the same problem. My ratios look pretty close to yours. I look at other people posting finds and they seem to find more seated and barber relative to the more modern silver. And my part of wisconsin is old enough where they should have been substantial enough population to loose the older coins.
Also some are finding way more nickels then me.
But.... I don't anybody in the state that seems to be doing much better, including some that have been detecting since the stone age. Not sure if we have more mineralization or more frugal forefathers.
I've tried digging very iffy signals and always turn out to be deep iron. I would like to hunt with some the the pros and hear what they consider a deep iffy signal.
Post if you find out anything
Chris

Yep, most of my deep iffy digging turns out to be nails also. I seem to have a feeling beforehand that it will be a fruitless dig, but I try anyways. I know what you mean about the nickels; I have done OK on older nickels when I decide to try for them, but there are some places that seem to be completely devoid of nickels, even though there are early wheats and IHs hanging around. I think maybe I should just bury a few 8 to 10 inch rosies in the park and practice on them. Don't know if it will help but it can't hurt.

I just hunted the past Sat with Keith from Indiana and as I'm still learning the explorer it helped me to listen to what he considered a deep target!!!!! & by the way they were Indians at 10" or a little better!!!
Mike
Just think what we could learn if we could hook up with Big Mike or Golddigger or the rest of the Pro's =))

you were only here a couple hours and the places I took you ended up sucking bad. Ok, so blame me then! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/tongue.gif" BORDER=0 ALT,":p">

And that was during the drought last year, I remember cracks in the earth so wide in the one park you darned near needed to wear snowshoes. You did have me check out one deeper signal that turned out to be a clad rosey. Appreciated that and hope to meet up again.
Chris

Hey Scott
I've fond some IH and silver dimes at 9"-10" (have periscope so I know for sure) and they were good strong signals, found newer wheats in a filled ball field that were deeper. And again still decent signals. I've heard that after a certain depth in mineralized ground everything starts to hit/sound like iron. That sounds to me like to get the real deepies would need to dig every deep signal; at a million and seven nails buried to every coin, don't like them odds.
I'm finding way more coins buried with trash than the real deepies, think the majority of coins in hard hit places were left is because of proximity to trash.
But that still doesn't explain the lack of barbers and seated. Think I had a dozen and a half barbers and 3 seated out of 150 or so dimes. Saw some of the IL and IN and of course MO boys that had about a third barbers and seated. Not sure it technique or luck, probably some of both.
Nickels I understand more, copper and silver with trash still will hit upper screen. Nickels with trash can end up most anywhere. If there are pennies and dimes being found there must be nickels there too.
Hope the snow melts tomorrow. Maybe get together some time.
Chris

go to settings press then press clear screen then scroll down to nail and click it twice. This is noisey but very leathal. You get max depth with this pattern.
