The fires continue here, but the local threat has been reduced provided the winds remain calm. The fires in the lower mountains near our house have claimed 193 homes destroyed and 109 damaged.
At one local Baptist Church 11 families lost their homes including a friend of ours. Members of the Baptist Church in the next town lost 8 homes and the Anglican Church lost 22 homes.
One teacher at our grandchildren's school lost her home, as did some of the children in our grandkids classes.
No one from our Church has suffered a loss despite being surrounded by the fires.
One man died of a heart attck whilst defending his home but no one has been killed directly by the fires. Quite a few have suffered injuries, mainly burns and smoke inhalation.
Our son Rodney has the day off today, only his second day off in over three weeks. He is exhausted after continuous 12 hour shifts. Our other son Peter was fire-fighting last night but he is safe and doing well.
We are still packed up ready to go, but the situation has eased for us. Many homes are still under serious threat, evacuations are likely today. but that is not now applicable to us unless we have serious winds again.
