Fins of not

landman

Member
The few times I have dove for treasure it was near shore. Swim areas with 10-20 foot depths. Fins were not necessary. I understand some like to navigate to the site and then take them off and hunt. Where do you attach them if you do this. Its so much better to streamline everything. However until they make retractable fins with the push of the button, it will be a choice depending on the location and conditions.
Got any other thoughts on this?

I dive on the average 3 times a week. I never wear fins when treasure diving with a metal detector from shore. I weigh myself heavy, generally 35 lbs or more and walk through the surf into the deeper water.

You need to do what you are comfortable with. The lack of fins makes moving about slowly and precisely much easier. I tried stubby fins like swimmers use and they work better than divers fins but still hinder my movement. I go in barebones but I would recommend that you wear a buoyancy compensator for safety. I always wear a full wetsuit for warmth and minimal flotation should the need arise.

Basically the rule of thumb is if you're wearing tanks, I'd have fins available....it's easy enough to bring a bungie cord to tie around your belt and hook your fins onto (wrapping around and securing them so they don't drift off). If you do find you need to make it to the surface with tanks on....boots aren't going to help.
